Can those of you in the know please explain why when driven very sedately i get a couple of hundred rev increase when dipping the clutch, but when driven with more vigour this does not occur???

Hi, i think you mean your revs flick up without putting your foot down - my 02 WRX does this, at first i thought it was my dump valve.

But I test drove a brand new STI that did it too.

Doubt it's much to worry about m8, may be a turbo thing.

Never noticed this (ahem, must be the way I drive ) but my guess would be if you're being gentle enough, the dump-valve doesn't have enough pressure differential to open, so effectively you're still on boost briefly after dipping the clutch.
Actually - I have had this happen, and it was when I was running without a dump-valve

I am sure this is built into the computer to help with gear changes so the engine speed hasn't dropped too far compared to the gearbox. I have noticed this on a number of fuel injected cars other than Subarus.

My old Vectra used to slow the rev drop when changing up-it was a nuisance because it delayed a fast gearchange.

It does it on my new WRX, the old classic Turbo didn't MY00, I thought it was something I was doing wrong!
