Black tape over headlights?

Question

Hey Guys,
Stoopid question prob, but i've seen a few pics of scoobies @ trackdays with black tape criss crossed over the headlights, what is this for??

I believe its to stop flying debris smashing the glass on the headlights

I though it might be the other way round.
ie if the cars headlight breaks, it minimises the glass thrown
out, onto the track.
