I managed to bottom out my scoob sport the other day and took the sump guard off and what looked like exhaust insulation from a sheer guess by a novice. Would this be correct, if so how badly needed is it and where can I get the stuff from.
Also, where is the best place to get a new sump guard from. At least I know they do the job Oops :

It would help if you said what the stuff looked like.
If the exhaust has been wrapped it is not essential but the purpose of wrap is to keep the heat in the exhaust to make the gas flow more freely and reduced heat egress into the engine bay.
If it is indeed wrap that you are referring to there are two main types. White woven wrap is applied as is and brown wrap which IMHO is far better has to be applied slightly wet. You also need tying wire. All this is available from any factor dealing in motorsport or demon tweeks etc.
