Nope sorry, just been informed, it's for the air/fuel supply... something like that anyway.

Cheers

Aaaahhh... is that the only place where charcoal is located in the fuel system?

Cool

It's the evaporative control systems charcoal canister, it traps fuel vapours. It is purged into the engine intake in certain conditions under ECU control (the evap purge control valve is used for this).

What would happen if the canister didn't get purged, but the purge line was allowed to vent to atmosphere?

Question

It would be naughty to vent it to atmos, please think of the bunny rabbits and flowers blah blah blah. And as for your engine, well, not much will happen really.

Anyone know if it's changed on any services? On the service schedule for a MY00 theres an item marked 'plugs+filter' and it's not the same row as the fuel filter? Could this be it?

I think it's a cunning device fitted by Subaru, to stop you from getting at the alignment bolt on Morettes unless you have hands the size of a baby, and are triple jointed!:

Ok...not worried about the bunnies at this time, so I won't bother figuring out how to re-connect it: Seems the legacy has different plumbing on this from the Impreza, and none of the induction kits cater for it.

Mine has 3 pipes on top and one off the bottom that goes into the wing...dunno where after that.

The extra pipe on the top went to the air intake via a nasty plastic valve that was connected to the engine vacuum (like a weeny dump valve). Took all that off.

So what is the little solenoid next to it that is under the inlet manifold and connected to the throttle body and is all rusty? Is that related?

That's your Charcoal Purge Cannistor, which gets controlled by your purge control solenoid valve. Later cars have this assembly in the back of the car by the gas tank, seems to make more sense. Car will run fine without it, but you will get a small amount of residue buildup over time, as it does collect extra gas vapour from your crankcase.
