Virtually every car I have ever had has had over 200bhp many of which have been run on standard unleaded.

None of these cars have ever developed any problems.

Why an I hearing that loads of scoobys are developing piston slap, even on UK cars. The UK scoobys only develop a mild 220bhp which in my opinion is not a lot of power. Why are they developing piston slap?

Is it just due to the fact that the engines are really ****e??

I have just bought a TypeR and seem to be going through expensive paces to look after the engine. I am now getting so worried that this engine may blow up that it worries me to use it as a daily car. I have never seen problems like this on other cars with similar performace engines. What happeneing??? Porche 996 turbos with over 400bhp seem to be good for loads of abuse and well over 100K miles.

It's cos in 97-98 subaru revised the piston (+engine) design, putting in pistons that had skirts which were too short.

Hence the fix is to change the engine block and piston heads.

Question

Sorry to hijack thread but when the dealer fixes a slapper

i.e. fit a new short engine (which is what happened to my MY97)
do they normally fit the later block or just replace it with another 97/98 block?

Cheers

Rich

the piston is avery so slightly small and when cold the pistons simmy up the block the fix is not a new block or head but one over sized piston in number 4 to take up the slack

still sounds like a cowboy repair job why wont they do all the pistons

got mine going in to be cheaked out as i only got it a few months back they try to fob you off with its ok sir etc etc but tell them bollocks you have 6 years to get manufacture deffects sorted just make shure you sevuce history is up to scratch

there are loads of threads about this and some mpegs of the sound of engine slap
