Probably the same as on most NA cars:
Freeflow exhaust system
Performance air filter (benefits debatable)

Then:
cams, heads, etc.

i had a sport and there's not much out there that I could find in the way of higher lift cams or anything. Because of the Turbo model everyone seems to leave this alone, which is a shame.

replacing the exhaust manifold will make a big difference along with going full de-cat.

A company in the US makes supercharger kits for their 2.5rs (which is naturally aspirated too) if you want to go for it!

N/A tuning is alot simplar than turbo tuning, however the gains arent as high.

first thing you need to do is get rid of the standard exhaust and filter. with N/A engines you do not go for large bore exhausts as this makes them undrivable below 3K revs (depending on size obviously) due to a lack of back pressure.

adding a filter further helps, and this combined with the exhaust can help alot.

after this you could look at a chip to remap the fueling. its at this point when you will be looking at doing internals.

firstly, flowing the heads and a set of cams would be your first thing to do (you can get your cams reprofilled). oversizing valves and double valve springs will help.

next would be an overbore with forged pistons and strengthend con rods, prehaps getting a stroker kit (if you can get one).

after this it is back to the induction, the best N/A tuning will come from a set of throttle bodies. at the moment you have just one TB and this is restricting airflow, so you change to 1 per cylinder (4 in total) and this way you get alot more air in (similar science to 8V/16V engines). a company called jenvey will be able to sort you out with this. TB's are expensive though, as you need a remapable ECU, however gains are impressive (a 150BHP vauxhall engine will go 220+ with tb's).

a cheqap alternative to TB's is twin carbs, something allong the lines of twin 45's on this engine. this will cost about £250 for the carbs and about £100-200 for the manifolds, however these are not reliable and fuel costs rise bigtime, plus they need re-adjusting every 6 months or so...

obviously there is alot more you can do, but this is the basics... your looking at spending around £5K to get dec ent power, and then you are talking the power of a turbo'd car with about £1K of mods, so in the long run it is cheaper to either get a turbo'd model or an engine swap...

Grahame May got 145bhp from his Sport by changing the exhaust and air filter.
Have a look here.
