Sorry for being ignorant folks, but can someone tell me the difference between a down pipe and an up pipe!!!
I have a down pipe so am aware of the differences but don't know what an up pipe is.
Cheers folks

The uppipe connects from the exhaust headers (collector) to the exhaust inlet on the turbo (the downpipe being connected to the exhaust outlet on the turbo).

The std uppipe is a cast jobbie and is know to cause both turbulence and restriction as well as having a tendency to split at high boost. Replacement uppipes are stainless steel tubes which essentially stabilise the gas flow into the turbo which has several positive effects.

Not really, and it will prevent the cat from potentially breaking into pieces and ending up in the turbo as can happen on higher boost levels.

Thanks for your replies guys.
Ed, I think the newer shapes have a cat here, mine is the classic, pretty sure no cat in that pipe.
Can I get an up pipe for the old shape turbo??????
If so I think there will be a wanted thread by the afternoon.
Anyone know which brand to go for?? Which are the best??
Any idea of cost for these on a classic???

Whilst the New Age cars have a Cat and a Lambda sensor in the uppipe the actual size and fitting is identical to the classic uppipe.

You can fit pretty much any replacement uppipe to a classic, the H&S has a pretty good reputation as does the MRT one although this is a lot more expensive, Jamie Whitfield has just started selling an uppipe made by Magnex which although listed as being for the STi7 should fit a classic no problem and is probably the cheapest of the bunch at around £80.

You will have to fit a bung to the lambda boss (or use it for an EGT probe).

Andrew, many thanks for your reply. Great info.
Will I have to get something welded into the hole as a bung, I take it I couldn't use a rubber one due to high temperatures!!
What is an EGT thingy??? Is one of these useful?
And finally, where in Lancashire are you?

I'm around Preston.

I'm picking up a used H&S Uppipe on Wednesday so I'll be able to tell you what the thread in the Lambda boss is then (about 11mm), a Stainless Steel Bolt would be best I think (although I'm fitting an EGT sensor).

I live in Leyland!!!
Just bought a pad in Croston, moving in at the weekend. Only 10 mins from you by the sounds of it. What a coincidence!!!!
Can you tell me what the EGT bit is..
When you have it fitted, perhaps you could mail me and let me know what you reckon..
Cheers
