Overheating but Cold Heater Problem/Advice...
#1
Hope somebody can offer some advice
This morning started car as normal, trundled off but after a couple of miles noticed the temp gauge at normal running temp but the heater was still pumping out cold - should say fking freezing air.
Kept going keeping an eye on the temp gauge and after another mile or so it started rising, luckily was near a service station so stopped there.
Let the car cool down for a while and checked the water level, seemed fine.
Started the car again and the temp seem to hold at normal level - still only freezing air coming fromn the heater though, drove on for another mile and suddenly the warm air appeared, temp now holding at normal running level.
Whats going on???
Anybody had the same symptoms??
(MY94 WRX)
Cheers

Don't know about the boxer engine, but I had this on a mini in a previous life. The water pump had packed up internally. The water near the gauge pickup gets hot, hence the guage reading, but the water is not circulated, so doesn't go through the heater....
If it is this, GET IT FIXED - my mini lasted about 20 mins, then melted one cylinder wall !!!!

As already said. Could have been an air blockage. But dont know weather its relivent but: Does the car have enough antifreeze in. Please correct me if Im wrong. But if the radiator freezes as it will when your moving if there isnt enough antifreeze present and the engine water hasnt had time to warm up. Then you keep travelling!!! and your engine temp will rise!! but the radiator could stay frozen especially if your doing motorway driving (As warm water freezes very fast). Then you stop and the boiling water has chance to melt the frozen water in the rad and the warm air comes in due to the now circulating water!!!
I have had this problem and that was my prob (Lack of antifreeze) that was on an calibra turbo. But same principle, and if you live in Scotland I saw on the news that the temp was down to -16 so could be some truth in my statement.
Regards Ronnie

Ronnie,
Thought about antifreeze on the way home last night, put some more in and the car seems fine this morning - will be keeping an eye on the temp gauge for rest of the winter.
Again thanks for your input.
