Question

Following on from the thread about MY99/00 ECUs being P'n'P, I am wondering about the MY97/98 ECUs. I seem to remember some posts about people swapping std UK ECUs for PPPs and having to get their keys recoded.

Does anyone have any experience of this or know the effect of the dealer fitted Cat1 alarm on these MYs?

Do JDM cars not have the immobiliser fitted?

Cheers,
Andrew...

if you fit a prodrive ecu you have to reprogram the keys.

I forgot in the original post, how are the keys recoded? Is it a Select Monitor function or something plugged into the immobiliser module?

Andrew,

as far as I know it's only that latter keys (the big bulky ones) that have chips in them. my97/98 keys dont. so could just be something in the ecu to 'reset' it to that particular car. although to what I have no idea ! (you might be right about the built in immobiliser!)

bttt anyway !

Steve (ScoobyDuck) they MY 97 keys do have a little something inside them like the newer keys. This applys for UK, not sure about imports.

I have a MY98, and you can see where the chip fits in the base of the key "handle" close to the shaft. It gave probs twice diring the first month when the engine refused to fire because it couldn't talk to the key. not sure how they cured it, but they did.

Not sure how they work, but all transponders are similar that they don't need any power. As long as its within say 15cm of the recepticle (which is usually at the ignition barrell) the code can be read from the transponder.

They are definitely fitted to UK MY97/98, you can see the little transponder cap where it's fitted to the key, and also if you take the steering column shroud off you can see the recepticle fitted to the lock barrell (it's a small square box with a wire coming off it). Also the light in the dash with a key symbol around it which flashes when the engine is stopped is this immobiliser AFAIK.

Paul_M the light on the instrument bin is the immobiliser and I know that there is a link from the ECU to the Immobiliser module, what I want to know is how do Subaru garages recode the ECU/Immobiler when an ECU is swapped?

Scoobyboy - do I take it that you have swapped a std ECU for a PPP one?

yes i'v swapped a few! you do it with the select moniter as rally colin says but there are two codes you have to put in one tells the ecu to get ready or initialize and the second tells the ecu to recode it

Scoobyboy,

Would you mind dropping me an email with some more detail on what you've just said.

Cheers,
