car is a uk my00 and has a full scoobysport exhaust and have just changed the ecu to a tek 1 and what a big differance, car is quicker and smoother with better boost control and better 2 drive all round, is this normal or did i have a crappy prodrive ecu? also what differance would a jb tek 2.5 make to my car?

Thats normal if you had a AE802 ecu. The Tek1 map is similar to the Ae800 and Ae801 maps.

The Tek2.5 will be more like PPP type performance utilising a Tek2 map with JB breathing slightly over it

Question

If you had a Prodrive ecu then the Tek1 should feel slower?

The Tek one has a maximum boost of around 14psi, whereas the PPP is 16.5psi. From that alone, it should feel quicker.

I personally wasn't impressed with the PPP ECU in my car (RB5). It did feel like it had more grunt through the gears (what it's meant to do), but it just didn't excite me enough.

A Tek 2, IIRC, will give you the same boost as the PPP but with better mapping.

The Tek 2.5 from John, is basically a natural progression from the Tek 2. Boost is increased slightly (17.5psi IIRC) and the mapping is tweaked slightly to give better results.

John kindly gave me a Tek 2.5 to plat with for a week and it was much better than the PPP IMHO.

Technically a Tek 2.5 should outperform a PPP ECU based on the mappings.

A little puzzled why the Tek 1 is better on your car than the PPP. The only explanation I can give you is that possibly your car was overboosting with PPP (assuming it was a pukka PPP ECU), hence it would not be smooth, and possibly slower overall. One Tek 2.5 I sent to someone turned out to perform less well than a Tek 2 on his car - it was overboosting but the Tek 2 was about right already.

When I had a PPP the dealer fiddled about with restrictors to get it right, but it never was totally right until I used an adjustable restrictor valve.

The 2 port boost control on the MY99/00 cars is very poor for achieving good boost control. In addition, different cars with different breathing mods do produce different boost, and even with the same mods there are often subtle differences.

If the mapper can see the car then an improvement should always be possible. Sending a postal map can do pretty well for a lot of cars, but sometimes raises issues, and there are more monitoring requirements.

Overall, the PPP runs a bit richer than the Tek 1 (which will reduce power and torque slightly), but it runs more ignition timing and more boost everywhere, so it SHOULD be comprehensively quicker if setup correctly on the car.
