Do Blow Off Valves Effect Fuel Consumption??
#1
Do they or dont they effect it, had this conversation with a friend of mine and they only way we think that it would effect it would be because your changing gear that often to hear the whoosh, hence the fuel consuption.....
Any other opinions?

You and your friend are absolutely correct!
Speaking for myself, I tend to take the revs up that little bit further for a louder dump, especially if there are frail old ladies at the bus stop

Ha! About 0.000000001%! And that's not being childish...
You could equally claim that the VTA raises engine efficiency through not re-routing oil (as the recirc ones do) as oil reduces the effective RON rating of the fuel, therefore retarding ignition, reducing efficiency therefore wasting fuel.

What'll happen will be you'll drive differently. Whether you mean to or not
How much time do you spend changing gear? 5% of the time (what your figure above would suggest)?
Um, no.
The car sounds better when driven hard with a VTA, so we all drive harder
So, I suppose yes, VTA does increase fuel consumption, but not itself - just because you are more likely to drive aggressively.
Does that help?

"They" don't make any difference - whether the car becomes less economical or not is up to you. Wear earplugs & you'll get the same 'economy' () as before, listen & play with the new noise & you'll use more fuel
