MY02 air temp sensor?

Whether this should be here or electrical...
Is the sensor in the o/side lower air intake of a my02 just a thermocouple for the outside temp on the dash or is it some link into the ecu giving vital information and would screw up the system if I reposition it?
I'm hopefully about to mesh over the lower intake and if I release the clip and move the sensor to the back of the its own plate, I can mesh straight across without having to cut a hole in it.
