Grinding Downpipe
#1
After having a SSdownpipe fitted today when I back off at around 4k rpm in 1st I hear and feel a grinding.
Further investigation tells me that it's the Engine touching the downpipe.
Darn annoying so may have to have it hammered into shape

eh? engine should touch downpipe, well turbo should...
What make downpipe, what Year and Model Car...
Take some photos if you can... I wouldnt hammer it though, (well actually I probably would) but you could possibly shear bolts on the turbo etc.

I have a similar problem but only when the steering wheel is in a certain position, which is caused by the downpipe touching the steering linkage. I think it is a known problem due to engine mounts (?) so it's probably worth investigating exactly what is touching before the hammer approach.

Went back to garage (who I completely trust as they race Subaru's) and the mechanis said that he found it really tight and straight away what the problem was from my description.
He said that if it persists he will tap it into shape in order to prevent any more abrasion.
Car is a MY95 Uk with a SSport downpipe from Subaru4you.

Right got under the car and have found the problem.
Where the downpipe goes over the gearbox cradle (H shapes cross member) it touches a bracket. The only way to get round it is to hammer the pipe flatter or realign the gearbox mounting.
