Question

'ello all,

Hope someone can shed some light on this.

Every now and again I get white smoke coming out of the vents inside the car. Only starts when the car reaches operating temperature and will carry on for one or more trips. Higher the temperature the more visible the smoke (which smells vaguely of anti freeze). Only way to prevent it misting up the windows is to turn the a/c on and set the temp to 20 degrees (which is a touch inconvenient if it's a cold morning). This smoke shows up with or without the a/c on, on recirc or taking air from outside.

Any ideas on what's causing it and more importantly how to stop it?

Thumbs up

Swan,

Have a look in the "interior" section - i asked the same question on tuesday, and there's an excellent answer explaining all...

Thanks! Have moved my query there as the "fix" of increasing the temperature aggrevates the problem.

Swan,

I have MY99 turbo in a garage at the moment, I had steam coming out of the vents. I have now found out that it is the heater matrix that has gone. Are you losing water? And is there water in the foot wells?

RyanB - No noticable water loss - I haven't had to top up for a few weeks. No water in the foot wells that I've noticed. Will check under the mats but I haven't heard/felt/smelt anything odd to indicate water in the wells.

Moles Dad - As per RyanB you end up paying one way or the other!
