Thanks lads

But do you think a tyre/exhaust fitting place would do it? How long would it take?
will i need any gaskets or joints of any kind?

Question

Hi i am going to be fitting a downpipe and exhaust to my98 turbo
How hard a job is it ? What should i look out for? How long is it likely to take?
Is it a job some of these tyre/exhaust fitting places could do for me?

Craig, sorry i can't help with the downpipe because i've not done that to mine yet,but i fitted a magnex centre section and rear box to my 98turbo and it was no problem once the car was reversed onto ramps,i used a bit of penetrating oil on all the old bolts and it came off a treat, nothing to be afraid of,hope this is of some small help.regards paul c

Cool

Graig

This reply comes with a warning - I've only done this on an MY01, so there may be differencs to your car - but no one else had replied so I thought I'd try.

To replace the downpipe you need to remove the heatshield over the turbo and apply some releasing fluid (plusgas, WD40, etc) to the five nuts. Leave for as long as possible. Beware stripping studs/nuts etc. Apart from that it is just a matter of removing the bolts and the exhausts from the hangers.

Hope that helps.

Craig,i didn't need to buy any gasgets but did use a little sealing paste for good measure(forgot to mention sorry)i'm sure any exhaust/tyre depot or dealer could do the job for you but no idea of price sorry i'm a bit too tight to pay for that sort of thing

I know a man that does very cheap work at a Tyre shop.
Getting four h&r Springs done for ............£30!
So exhaust will prob cost about ? £10

saves the old paws getting manky

did my downpipe two weeks ago, MY98 too.

it took me 3 hrs start to finish. (im a chippy BTW, not very mechanicaly minded and i have basic tools)

1. take off intercooler. - can be a bitch to get back on BTW

2. remove heat shield - was the worst bit IMHO, loads of little bolts in fiddly places

3. jack front of car up and put on stands.

4. undo 5 nuts on turbo/DP - i had originally planned to soak these in WD40 for 24 hrs but after a curious check they came undone very easily. 4 were accessible from the top, one i had to get underneath

5. undo 2 nts/bolts between DP/Centre sect.

6. Undo gearbox mount bolt

7. remove OEM DP and fitting decat DP is reverse. use the original gaskets (one on turbo and one at bottom of OEM DP)

you will need to cut the heatshield to fit though

hope this helps, mail me if you require any more info

cheers

It took 2 hours to replace my downpipe due to the bolts being a pain some come out easy, some dont
i think there are 5 bolts in total, 3 are not threaded? 2 are?
Dont naff the 2 threaded ones up!!
Being an MY98 the chances are its going to take some time as heat/cold/rust etc have probably taken their toll...

the standard dp is slimmer then the decat - depending on the dp of course

i fitted a magnex twin dump which was wider (two pipes) therefore requiring me to cut the heat shield to fit, you'll soon see

what dp are you gettingBTW?

It depends on the type of Down pipe that your going to fit, a twin dump will mean that you have to cut n chop your heatshield, a single neck like the scoobysport one will be ok, in the end a d/p is personal choice
