Okay peeps...help...driving with the window open nowadays..(hot weather etc) and if I put my foot down in 5th at a low speed (say 30mph) I hear a "jingling" noise....a sort of pleasant metal on metal jingle bells kind of noise...like a loose braket rattling on the exhaust (which is what I am hoping this is).

Only seems apparent at certain RPMs in certain gears...notably when the engine is 'labouring' (i.e. off boost and being asked to work hard, going uphill or whatever)

Please help! If I am running lean then I can't drive the car until it is fixed.

Steve

On my old MY00 UK Turbo, the heatshield on the up pipe broke away and was rattling under the same circumstances as yours, low speed higher gear.

Took my dealer 2 services and 15000 miles to identify what it actually was....

Hopefully, this is your problem, not serious, just annoying...

Cheers

Simon

Talking

That is what I am hoping too.

It sounds like it.

Thank you.

Hmm...good excuse for new up-pipe, down-pipe and full exhaust sytem.

Sounds like an engine rebuild. You see? Who's got the last laugh now.

Wink

Good excuse to change your driving habits so you don't labour the engine - driving it at 30mph in fifth or up hill is going to do it no favours whatsoever.

30mph in 5th!!! The noise you are hearing is almost certainly "pinking" ie pre-ignition which is mild det. Change down 2 gears and give the poor thing a chance!
The trouble with the Scoob engine is that it gives very little indication of labouring, but that doesn't mean to say it's happy.

Lightbulb

Having re-listened it actually does it at WOT in all gears....even if you are accelerating in 1st or 2nd it does it at that point in the rev-range, so I am going with the 'loose metal' theory rather than an internal problem.

And believe me, I am not in the habit of doing 30mph in 5th.
However, I noticed it in 4th gear...and when you have a scab you always pick at it, don'tcha?
