Forgive the lameness of the following question but I have just purchased my MY95 WRX - RA and have no books or knowledge:

I'm guessing you fill the water up in the tank at the front left of the car with the words 'do not open when hot' printed on the top. When I first got the car there was no water visible in here, so I put some in, and once again there is no water visible. Is there a MIN - MAX limit for this tank, I have gone from a clear bottle with a min/max level to this and I do not understand. Am I supposed to fill it to the brim with water?

FYI the temperature gauge on the car is halfway when driving, which I assume is fine.

Thx for your help, its the only way I'm gonna learn.

Hi, if you look just in front of yourbattery there is a yellow filling cap. That is where you put the water in and if you look on it car fuly it has min and max on it.

Don't get confused with the oil filler cap though!!!

you're right in saying to put some water in the clear neck (front right of engine bay), but as far as I was aware, that is a reserve tank. Water should also be topped up in the metal tank (front left) as mentioned in the original question. My handbook says to keep both topped up. Inside the metal tank there is what looks like an inner neck, the top of which should be the "full" level.

Hope I'm not talking crap....

May be talking total rubbish as I have a MY01 and haven't seen a MY95WRX, but in the MY01 it uses a header tank.

When the engine is cold I can see some water at the bottom of the tank but when the engine is hot the level rises significantly.

May be worth taking the car out for a 15 minute run or so and seeing if the water level rises.

I would be surprised if the header tank should be brimmed as it will overflow when the engine is hot.

Cheers Steve H, you make the most sense so far. The one in front of the battery has big writing on it saying COOLANT, it also says see owners manual. This leads via a samll pipe to the metal tank mentioned in the initial question, and a big pipe goes off into the bodywork somewhere.
