hi am getting an engine management light for code p0031, my mechanic says it the catalytic converter but researching this code tells me its the sensor on the engine bank, is it possible not having a cat would set off this code?
also it was fine when i bought the car but code came 6 months later, so am guessing someone would of stole my cat? lol
its a 2004 blob wrx
engine runs fine, has been like this for over a year

P0031 HO2S Heater Control Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
This is the A/F (Air/Fuel) sensor that sits in the exhaust manifold just before the uppipe.
If the heater circuit is not working you will find your fuel economy will suffer.
If it's the sensor and not the wiring that's failed, it's usually best to replace with an OEM Denso sensor (or equivalent from the Denso catalogue).

I had this error recently.
Replaced the upstream sensor which is on the right from the wheel area.
Installed DENSO 2349011 and that solved the problem.
Decided to replace both sensors, just in case (downstream sensor DENSO 2344732), and used this adapter which made the replacement a breeze.
This is the offset adapter, for the upstream sensor you may have a non-offset, straight socket-adapter.
