Which Turbo for Bugeye??
Chaps,
The time has come to treat my Bugeye WRX which I've had from new. Just after buying, I took it to Scoobyclinic where after a turbo back system, air filter and remap managed to get about 270. I want to get another 100 out of it so will be looking at a different turbo, injectors, STi tmic and another remap.
I'm thinking VF34 at the moment but with so many out there is this better than VF35??
What about the others - Td05, VF22, 23,28, 39,43?????????
Many thanks

I've been looking into the same, I've pretty much settled on the td05 18g or 20g but won't be purchasing till after Christmas so that may change, but so far it seems to be the best option to get close to 380 :-)

^^ like shreksta says, that much on a 5 speed will be pushing it although it's the torque not the bhp that will kill it.
Gentler driving style will preserve it better but a high mileage wrx engine will be on borrowed time if you start pushing the envelope imo.
A vf35 or vf30 will do the job just fine if you can find one that's low mileage and hasn't had the **** kicked out of it which will be a tougher proposition nowadays.
Craig Bellworthy on various FB groups does rebuilds on the IHI turbos.
Failing that a good billet 18g will be nice and be cheaper than the SC36 equivalent but will probably finish your engine .
SC's are just blouch turbos rebranded anyway.
I'd also recommend a brake upgrade first if you're still running the crappy 4 pots otherwise you'll probably end up crapping yourself when you need to stop quick (been there done that )

Seen this time and time again,
you need to lower your expectations on 370.
320 is a nice number and another 50hp on what you have, and will be able to use it ,
trouble is yea you can slap a turbo and sti tmic on but you havnt mentioned anything about clutch/ fuel pump/ up pipe , 3inch or 2.5 system etc etc
you have two realistic options really.
1) sell and buy an sti and run 370-400hp all day,
2) build yours to 320/330hp 310ft and spend rest of your money on handiling ,

Sell and buy a STI... LOL.in an ideal world that would be an option but being realistic just pick up the mods that you have mentioned basically swapping to STI gear and use the VF35 turbo off of it and you should be fine, definitely think of upgrading fuel pump/injectors first though before a turbo upgrade, the WRX clutch should be able to take the increased torque if it is in good condition, but as said above you will have to drive sensibly i.e no hard launches as you can kiss good bye to your gearbox...saying that though I have known a few WRX gearboxes to be happy around 400bhp but the million dollar question would be...for how long?Don't let people put you off its the natural progression with "Turbocharged Cars" that you will want more power eventually,if you want to upgrade the turbo do so,but be intelligent about it,by adding the correct supporting mods first.SJ.

Selling and buying a sti is realistic ,
a unopened 01-02 wrx engine isn't going to last a length of time at 370hp, and to be fair the amount of money it would cost to get that is near sti money.
Or you need this lot-
No stock turbo makes that on a wrx so aftermarket sc36/38 or 18g/20g
up pipe matched to turbo spec not a 2.5 inch eBay Jobbie
Intercooler sti runs up to 380-400 or fmic it
Fuel pump
3inch full decat
3port
clutch / flywheel
plugs grade 7s
mapping of your choice.
injectors sti pinks will max at 370 so best to look for bigger.
Fuel reg.
but all the above added up with a engine/box that will be on borrowed time. Seems logical to just buy the sti is this power is your goal
Nothing against the wrx im currently enjoying one but same time not power chasing. As worry enough it will brake lol.
The best thing like sj and I mentioned Is buy some sti parts which come up regularly and save some penny's for other areas on your car ,
brakes , tyres , suspension.
you can have a very well built car with only 320/330 realistic for the vf35 that will leave a thrown together 370/380 hp unless drag racing up your local dual carriage way is your thing.
I guess depends on your budget / attachment to your car is, but the list is above if you wish to choose to try it out.

Aside from the wholly valid points of your engine and gearbox not being able to take 370hp for a long time...
I would be very careful of number chasing. You're currently running a TD04 that can outspool every single turbo mentioned in the upgrade. Always buy the smallest turbo that can/might make your power target. Its always better to have a smaller more responsive turbo delivering somewhere near your target than finding a larger more laggy turbo that will make your target but could potentially be a dog to drive or require a very different driving style to what you are currently used to.
I've been ther and done that although at a slightly higher level. I had a mapped VF35 making about 350. Went SC38 to try for 400, Made 395 and really didnt enjoy driving the car because of the difference in lag. I ended up going back to a VF35 in the end.
Also, there's no need to go 3" axhaust at 370hp. I ran a 2.5" system with 395hp on an SC38.
