Default Oil build up on exhaust (down-pipe?)

Hi all,

I've owned my MY05 Impreza Wagon for 3 months now and I love it - been very reliable and the only things I have had to do are a lambda sensor and some windscreen wipers.

While changing my oil yesterday I noticed a sludgy mess on what I thought was the downpipe, not 100% sure if this was oil or some other fluid.

The pictures are after I wiped off the substance for fear of fire at some point.

Any ideas guys?

Could be from turbo itself if on the way out or the turbo rubber drain hose forget the name.
seems a lot if it was rocker gasket and think that leaks onto manifold/uppipe area.
you should Jack car up and lie on your back with a torch ,it's quite busy up in that area to see anything.

I was thinking that about rocker cover too - it seems a bit far back. I'll have a good look up there tomorrow, you think it could mean the turbo is on its way out or just a bit of a leak?

I'm not sure if its related or its just me getting used to the power but I don't feel like the car boosts that aggressively (my car is PPP by the way).

Cheers

I had exact same car and out of the blue the turbo gave up and started pissing oil out.
it came out where the 2 sides of the turbo join together. It doesn't actually look like oil could get out as they are so tight together.
I didn't notice until car didn't really boost at all so I don't know if it started as a gradual leak.
I bought another 2nd hand td04 and had it rebuilt with a larger compressor billet wheel.
if it is turbo then they are cheap fix.
if you lay under car you can just about see a route to the turbo and you will see if it is leaking.
you will also see the turbo oil drain tube.
it's a 2" rubber hose, check it for splits.
Cheers. Justin

I took the chance to get under it quickly tonight and this was basically all I could see, I'm not sure if there was oil any further up or not...

In a way I'm hoping it's the turbo and if/when I swap it out I'll get more power

Is it drive shaft rubber boot split? Oil looks golden though.
like I say there is a visual route to the turbo ,but you have to find it.ha ha.

Hmm.

I do get quite a bit of drivetrain noise especially when the torque on the driveshaft switches from deceleration to acceleration, or vise versa. I've heard this is normal but it seems quite loud.

Maybe this is related..?

Cheers, I'll look into changing the boot over and see if it helps.
