Default Uprated turbocharger?

Hello,

When I bought my wrx the guy said it had an uprated turbo, any idea what it could be ? I can't get underneath the car at the moment.

Thanks.

You don't need to get under, you can see the turbo from the top,you should be able to see markings/numbers on there or take a pic and post it up.

Might be a billet TD04, but no way of checking that from looking at the outside!

Any idea what other mods it's got and what power it's running?

billet flywheel, stage 1 clutch, full coilover suspension, walbro fuel pump and 3 inch straight through exhaust system with 4.5 inch tail pipe, I need to change exhaust, it's driving me nuts 😬

None of these help to identify if it's been modified for performance though and none help to point towards the turbo upgrade unfortunately.

Did the previous owner give you any more detail on upgrades? Is it still running the WRX intercooler?

Looking more likely that it's still running the TD04L turbo to be honest.

Get it on a dyno and see what power it produces, i suspect you'll get a nasty surprise and find its running a stock td04

get a boost gauge plumbed in and see what boost its making. an uprated turbo will most likely be running more than 1 bar of boost. 0.8 or 0.9 will be around standard boost. was there any mention of mapping at all?

^^^^ This.

For the minimal cost of a remap you will get the car running right and up to it's potential, correct any pending issues that could cause you problems or failures at a later date and find out what it'll be making.

It's a small price to pay for peace of mind in my opinion.

He did say it's running around 280bhp the now but said 300+ with turbo turned up. Plenty power for me right now tbh.

I take it it I would need remap for new exhaust system?

Why would you buy a car that you have no idea what parts are fitted to it

I'm sticking with TD04 turbo then at a guess if it's only making a complete guess bhp figure of 280bhp based on no actual rolling road data.

As Tidgy said, probably the original turbo which even if tuned will not make a lot more than you've got now.

No STI top mount intercooler?

Well good job! We all have to start somewhere. Bought my first Subaru 10 years ago now having never owned one before, but having owned LOADS of fast jap cars up to that point.

Welcome to the fold.

Post some pics up man!!!! Engine bay pics too if you have any.

It will have a top mount intercooler as standard, they all do. If it had been upgraded to the STI intercooler at some point then it would have stood a better chance of having a better turbo fitted than the TD04 which I suspect is still fitted.

Hello again, I couldn't get right in at the turbo with other stuff being in the way so not the best photos, sorry. Think you might be right saying TD04 or TD04-L
