Default Engine refresh

Hi,
I'm considering pulling apart my spare engine with the intention of getting my 11yr old lad to help. The engine in question is an ODB WRX version 3 which ran up until I removed it 2 years ago. The rebuild will be as simplistic as possible, I've no intention of going forged with it.

Am I looking at just new rings, HG, headbolts, shells or should I look at head skimming/facing, new modine etc etc?.
How do the v3 wrx heads differ in comparison to the v4 STI heads I rebuilt a few years ago?.

Any input would be appreciated.

apart from cam spec differences the main variant is the std WRX heads of that age had an "over bucket" shim arrangement (approx 10p sized) whereas the V3/4 STI uses an "under bucket" shim (small watch battery sized)

heads and block would be worth checking at min. and unless it suffered any form of failure then everything should be a check and re-use style build........

carry pretty much all items on the shelf as required

Lovely thanks. The v4 shims were a pain in the **** to get hold of, are the overbucket easier to source in various sizes?.
Would it just be a check on the mating surfaces of the head/block?.
Thanks for the help
