Default Fuel smell

Hi,

I have a 2004 WRX (PPP if that makes any difference). If it sits ticking over, there becomes a fuel smell inside the car. Drive off and all is well until you stop in traffic and the smell returns. Any thoughts

Cheers
Ade

4 places to check here:-

In the engine bay where the pipes meet the fuel filter
Under rear seats near side where the pipes go down through the car to the outside (common corrosion point)
Under rear seats offside where fuel pump pipe work is
Under wheel trim offside rear where fuel filler pipe work is (also common corrosion point)

Oh and if it's less pure fuel and more exhausty fuel smell then it's likely a gasket somewhere between exhaust manifold and turbo.

Cant seem to edit posts on my phone

Yes actually now you say that it is more of an exhaust smell. I need to check. I have noticed that if you have the heater fans turned off, you dont get it. Many thanks for your help!!

Have a good look, and I mean GOOD look at the fuel pipes from the underbonnet filter to the injectors. They run across the front bulkhead.

My classic had this. One day, the smell became eye-watering, I was near home, so drove into my drive and popped the bonnet, ........to find fuel under pressure P!SSING out of a split in the pipe, all over the turbo and hot exhaust.

I quickly switched it off and stood watching it, awaiting the inevitable huge WOOOOOF! that would mean the end of my car...but it never came.

AliB on here advised me what tubing to buy to replace the old...not cheap, but a worthwhile job.

Take it seriously, mate.
