Project Classic Reshell
Bit of background to my query before I dive straight in – I own two classic Imprezas (facelift my00), both mica red saloons, one is a 2.0 N/A Sport and the second a UK2000 Turbo.
I bought the turbo first, but where I live up here in Aberdeen we are very liberal with the salt application to our roads; this car was bought new in Aberdeen and as far as I know has spent most of its life here, hence rust. Inner (strut) and outer arches both sides, sills both sides and general rust bubbles on most panels including the roof and A pillar.
The sport was bought from England and is a lovely solid example – solid shell fully waxoyled and treated – basically an excellent base in which to reshell the Turbo.
Now I have done some searching, have found some information but not all that I need; most people seem dead against turbo’n a sport, but as I have both vehicles here already this seems the logical thing to do as I’m not turbo’n the sport purely using its shell.
I have ramps, air tools, a helper etc. basically everything set up that I would need and I plan on stripping both cars back to bare shell and basically putting all the turbo stuff onto the sport.
What I would like to know is what parts are compatible / the same on both? The sport is much nicer underneath so I’d like to reuse as much of the components from this as possible, but I’m well aware a lot of it won’t work with the turbo bits. Will be rerunning fuel lines, brake lines etc. Is anything reuseable? PS pump, suspension arms, basically anything at all? If not it’s no problem, just want to be aware of as much as I can before committing to the job.
Cheers

The official / legal aspect of doing the reshell is all going to be done properly, I've already looked into it so no worries there - I'm not insuring a turbo as a sport.
Funny you mention that though, the insurance is almost identical on the sport and turbo for me, tax is same and mpg both as bad as each other.

Morning, I'm up in Inverurie so no not far from you at all - I see you've done a rebuild job before did you upgrade a lot of the parts? Just wondering if you did any powdercoating etc. locally?
Both shells are on almost the same mileage, the sport is 112k and the turbo is 114k.
I have contemplated just patching up the turbo but it would just be fixing it until the next problem and realistically going to cost more in fabrication and welding than doing the swap I'd say.
I don't want to do a complete refurb / replace everything as that will work out too pricey, as it's only a uk2000 I want to keep it sensible and just have a nice solid car.

Not far at all bud, I live near fyvie but work at Kintore autobody.
Suspension wise I've left mostly standard, just made sure it's all in good condition . Will be rebuilding the p1 with new subframe diff suspension parts.
PPS in inverurie I have used before, done a good job, however use the wheel specialist mostly as used to work there and there a good bunch.
What work is required to the turbo, can be sorted I bet and has been done before. The inner arches , sills and strut top mounts are common and can be done relatively cheaply with some know how
I'll have to pop by one day and have a chat and a look bud. I'm off work tomorrow so could say hi

Nice one, yeah that would actually be an idea if you could come have a look - sills have been patched before, inner arches are bad both sides which I'd assume is difficult to weld due to access even with shocks removed.
The area I'm talking about is:
So you run a P1 now? Ultimately I'm wanting a classic wagon STI so don't want to go OTT with this project. I'm working tomorrow so wont be around but am off Thursday and Friday.
Cheers.

The sti and p1 have similar problems up there. Difficult to access however it's a flat area so can be done easily enough once replacement plate made
I'm working Thursday Friday and the weekend. If you like I could pop by at about 6 ish if you want. I'll pm you my number
The p1 is a long term resto in waiting, the sti is nearly ready bar some a pillar welding, there's a thread in here I'm doing about it.
There's replacement rear arch outers available on eBay. Seem to be okay
