Default What turbo upgrade?

I have a 2002 WRX at the moment that came with the PPP.

Im looking at a turbo upgrade, STi intercooler, Decat down pipe with STi up pipe, Possibly injectors as well.

Just wondering what turbo is recomended?

My driving style isnt aggressive so ideally want it to boost low down to make it a nippy road car rather than top end speed.

You'll need injectors as your wrx ones will max out around 300, most people fit either a VF35/34 or TD05 16g as a first turbo upgrade on a wrx. Much more than that and your gearbox is at risk.

From what I have read up on the VF series and TD05 they have quite a bit of lag.

Ideally I want boost to come in around the same or even lower than my standard TD04 does.

Thinking going down hybrid route but if there is a turbo "off the shelf" that can get similar results then I would be happier.

It was Jake that recommended the hybrid route but I was just wondering what other options there was.

Alternatively, you could stick with your TD04. Uppipe/downpipe plus custom map is quite a big improvement over the generic PPP.

I can imagine with those mods the initial spool up of the turbo might be increased but you'll still lack midrange grunt and top end. The turbo will be the limiting factor I reckon. maybe not though, will the uppipe and downpipe increase midrange and top end?

Uppipe will reduce spool even further and the downpipe helps throughout the whole rev range.

"My driving style isnt aggressive so ideally want it to boost low down to make it a nippy road car rather than top end speed."

A bigger turbo will improve torque and power in the mid to high range, at the expense of spool and low rpm grunt. So a bigger turbo may go against what the OP wants. Standard PPP is probably only about 250bhp and not much more torque. By fitting a free flow exhausts, removing 2 of the CATS and having a custom map, you can see more like 280bhp and 300lbsft, whilst not sacrificing any spool. Obviously you still run out of puff at 5.5k but that sounds more like what the OP is after.

Have a look at some of the maps:

PPP v Custom

http://www.racedynamix.co.uk/remap/p...us-custom-map/

TD04 custom

http://www.racedynamix.co.uk/remap/s...p-impreza-wrx/

TD04 custom

http://www.racedynamix.co.uk/remap/2...4-impreza-wrx/

With VF35, full decat, etc

http://www.racedynamix.co.uk/remap/2...x-358-9-bhp-2/

Sure, the last one is making a lot higher bhp because it is able to make power past 6.5k but look at the torque curve to get an idea of how it drives. It makes 300lbsft 700rpm later than the TD04 cars.

At 3.5k it's barely making 200lbsft whereas the TD04 are 100 (50%) lbsft higher at 300lbsft at the same rpm. So a TD04 may be better option for the OP than a bigger turbo. A hybrid TD04 may give you the best of both worlds but it's very difficult to find dyno figures for them. It's something I'm considering but I expect improvements of maybe 5-10% throughout the rev range, with a little more top end without increasing the spool noticeably.

It's of course a considerable additional expense when a stock TD04 may suffice.

All stock TD04? Great info there, any idea what boost the 04's are running? My biggest concern with the standard TD04 is pushing it to its boundaries to achieve them numbers, I'm currently running 1.4bar according to the gauge with a decat midpipe, afterburner middle pipe with resonator and Prodrive backbox + map......I have no idea what the bhp figure is, but I'd like to get to 300 by changing the uppipe, downpipe, tmic and injectors if needed but I'm wondering what boost pressure will be needed???

You won't make 300bhp with a TD04 (or rather, it's very unlikely without an optimistic dyno). Increasing the boost will just generate heat. You need a bigger turbo or hybrid for those numbers. 280-290 on a TD04. Are you actually going to notice another 10bhp or so at 5.5k? If it's a weekend or track car, then it's an easy decision to go to a bigger turbo as you are more likely to be driving hard and less likely to be be pootling about amongst other road traffic.

If it's your daily driver, then it's a harder choice to make over sacrificing response, low-down torque and flexibility, in order to chase a "number".

Maybe have a dyno run first and see what numbers you are pulling? It's the law of diminishing returns. The biggest hindrance to power on a WRX TD04 are the CATS in the downpipe and fuelling. Sports CAt, second CAT delete, Fuel Pump and filter should see 270+ with a remap. That's up from 220+ stock. You can then add an uppipe, port and wrap the manifolds, colder plugs, injectors, STi TMIC etc which will all help a little with either power or spool but none of them will have as great an impact as the decat, pump and remap. More air in/out, increased boost, more fuel.

If you are referring to the maps, yes I know....but they were all on one site and are pretty consistent with basic TD04 mapping. And I'm too lazy to search across multiple sites - I'll leave that for the OP.

Anything involving dung khan is bound to involve needing a new crank.

hybrid is the route imo

fitted the bigger turbos and its just laggy, the hybrid td04 is the best of both worlds,

according to my mapper my hybrid td04 was macthing my vf34 up till around 5.5k, but came in nearly 900rpm earlier

if your changing at 5.5k your driving it like a *****, man up and get those revs up

All joking aside, got a dyno graph?

Have you looked into a vf28? Great spool and can be found for around £250-£300. With a map and supporting mods then 330bhp is a good bench mark

even the Vfs will tail off at 6.5k so it balances out and depending on what you want from the car. 1k earlier spool or 1k more at the top end
