Default Ticking time bomb...

I have a 2002WRX, does anyone know what the fast ticking noise is in the engine bay when the ignition is on.

So far nothing's exploded

I should have maybe made it a bit clearer, the ignition is fully on - just before starting, the engine isnt running.
thanks for the suggestions.

It's not in test mode is it? (Thinking of classic but might be same on newage?)
It would mean the boost solenoid is activated, put your finger in the bcs to see if it's that.
Can you not track down the noise to a specific area?

I tried to locate the source of the noise, but it sounds as loud anywhere in top of the engine - my job is technical so its annoying that I cant pin point it any better.
I am not sure if the Newage's have a test mode.

Do the radiator fans come on when you have the ignition on?

as the engine isnt running, so safe to do so, get soctest extension bar or decent screwdriver and put the bar/driver on various ares of the engine and the other end to your ear, then narrow down the sound, or buy a cheap stethoscope and do the same until you find the ticking.

spoke before thinking.... I know where it is, I will disconnect it and see if the noise stops.

Still dont know why it would pulse though, I dont show any boost issues on the gauge...

Yeh unless in test mode(plugging both green and black connectors under the steering column) would activate the bcs,but usually the rad fans would also be activated with ignition on and car not started.
Possibly just the green connectors would set the bcs only?

morning all,

I traced the ticking to the throttle position sensor, on the lower near side of the throttle body. Still no idea why it ticks - its showing a changing value when I view it on torque pro.
There is still a faint buzz or hum in the background - like a mains 50Hz hum - but one thing at a time!!

Why is the TPS clicking?
Why when I unplug it, can I also hear a louder click, like it drops out a solenoid or something nearer the top front of the engine.

Any ideas anyone?
