Default Engine rebuild recommendations

Hi all, first post on the forums so bare with me.

I have the opportunity to buy a 1998 Impreza 2000 Turbo Wagon from a friend of mine for reasonable money, but it requires an engine rebuild.

He burst a coolant pipe and decided it was best to drive it to his father in laws garage. This obviously caused substantial engine damage, killing the head gasket and probably making a mess of the bores/rings. He bought a replacement engine that needs completing and fitting, but the rest of the car is in good condition for its age.

I've obviously never driven it, but he said it drove superbly before it went pop (and he is a close friend so I take his work fairly seriously)

I just wanted to know what else I should look at/look out for before rebuilding the engine, and if there is anything that is worth upgrading whilst the engine is apart to improve future reliability. I would ideally like to use it as a spring board into some track work as it has been an ambition of mine to have a bit of fun on a nice section of tarmac.

I'm not bothered about chasing crazy power, but reliability is key here.

Any hints or tips chaps?

Ross
