Hi all

So its been 5 years since i had a scoob, so bought another one today from my local garage... 2006 wrx with only 50k miles and full subaru service history... great.... well... not so much

anything over 20mph and the car starts to shake, and by shake i mean it feels like the car is being pulled left and then right really quickly, the faster you go the worse it gets (you can't really take it past 60, its impossible to drive!)... took it back to the garage and they thought it was the tyres, replaced them all and re balanced.. no difference... im taking it in on monday but thought i would go armed with a list of "can you check this please"

so its had 4 new tyres all balanced and checked - what else could be causing it?? interesting note is that it seems to be worse now they've had the wheels off and changed the tyres!

its almost impossible to hold onto the steering wheel past 55 so it cant be doing the car any good!

Wheel bearings, track rod ends?

 

with having no mechanical experience im literally just making a list for them unfortunately ... would these be expensive to replace (although hopefully they will foot the bill!)

 

Seems like a bush in the arms jack it up and have a feel may evan be the track rod end keep us informed

 

Tell them its not fit for purpose fix or refund

 

Take it back and give them one chance to sort it or hand it back and get a full refund.

 

Is the wheel shaking or the car.

 

they are being really helpful so far... replaced all 4 tyres and they are giving me a loan car tomorrow while they keep the scoob...

anyway ive just driven home from work (albeit.. very slowly) im convinced the problem goes (or subsides dramatically) when im turning? What could this point too?

Regarding the question if its the wheel or the car... im not sure you can see the wheel moving left and right and the car definitely shakes and doesn't feel good

i feel a bit disappointed and deflated with this as ive spent all my money on it

 

Take it for a 4 wheel later alignment

 

alignment seems the most "logical" issue as the problem does feel like its coming from the wheels. I do really appreciate everyones suggestions and will feed it all back to the garage tomorrow

Even though im really disappointed this has happened the garage is still being super helpful at this point, they're even lending me a Rav4 courtesy car to get me by the weekend!

Fingers crossed its a simple solution and they will have it flying straight tomorrow! Thanks for the suggestions thus far everyone!

 

Don't do anything to the car other than take it back until either it is fixed to your liking (and quickly too), or until they give you your money back.
If you intervene in solving a problem that was with the car originally you may find you end up owning it.

 

Thanks Blue - i've no intent of "fixing" it myself, I wouldn't know where to start... interesting point #2... after someone asked about if the "vibration" was in the wheels or the steering wheel i popped out again, and at 25mph once it started shaking i took my hands of the wheel, i couldn't feel the movement in the car! just see the steering wheel moving... then i started to feel the type of "movement" its almost as if the power steering was trying to always correct its self, and i think its only worse at speed because.. well... im going faster and i think its naturally exaggerated...

it also goes when im turning the wheel... this makes me wonder... is it a power steering issue??

 

I'm surprised the garage hasn't already removed the drive belt and done a quick road test to eliminate the power steering.
Miss-matched gearbox/diff causing diff wind up ??

Take it back, and tell them it's 10 years old, not new.

Have a look at the wheels, if there's loads of weights on them, they could be buckled.

 

Could be warped brake discs I've had that before it shakes the steering wheel vigorously.

 

Just get a refund, can't believe what I'm reading tbh.

I don't get this either. You went to a garage bought a car without test driving it then as soon as you drove out the garage and down the street you found the whole car shakes violently . Did you not to a u turn and drive straight back in and demand your money back . Did the garage never drive the car themselves either ?

 

Let's not beat the guy up fellas.
Sure he's made a **** up but he's got enough on his plate I think.

Let's give him the advice he's asking for and get him back on the road.

Fair comment . Personally my advice is get your money back .maybe leave a deposit with a view to buy the car dependant on the issue being fixed.

Seems strange the garage tried to sell the car with such an obvious fault

 

As above buying a car without test driving is crazy, id take it back and get yer money back, there great cars out there just look for a decent one.

 

+1. Take it back. If they work out what is wrong and fix it only consider buying it again with an independent inspection and extended (and water tight) warranty.
If you do take it back and leave it could you let us know the car so everyone else can keep an eye out?

Thanks so much for all your advice. I got a call from the garage today... Some brightspark had put a small washer over one of the studs on the hub?! so the wheel was out!

They've inspected both the hub and the alloy and are happy no damage has been done. I've been out in it a few times today and it seems to be driving perfectly

...back in the turbo lane

 

And a new set of tyres .not bad. Strange they didn't notice when they changed the tyres

 

Genius. Glad they're not doing brain surgery. Did they offer you an extended warranty?

 

Yeah I did get 4 brand new tyres so thats great... and yeah i dont think i will be taking the car back to there for any work / servicing :P

regarding the warranty, he did give me 3 months... what this includes is anyones guess... it does have 12x subaru main-dealer stamps (including one less than 2k miles ago) so im pretty confident its mechanically sound!
