Hiya, they wanted over 3k and all i have is cyl 4 down to 140psi with the other 3 at 160psi. So thought it was a bit much for 1 slightly leaky piston!

Afraid you have a big wake up call coming. cylinder down IS full rebuild, they can't do just one piston. Whole engine needs be stripped down to the bare crank to find out what the damage is to then rebuild the whole lot so it doesnt fail again.

Cheap repair will only give you more problems later. May be a 5k car now, but come service/repair time its still the 20k car it was when new.

Sounds like it could be just the head gasket or a valve (they do go like any other part)why not get a specialist to strip it and have a proper look before all the keyboard experts tell you its a 5 grand rebuild.
Get it looked at properly first, is my 10p worth.
Cheers

Once the head gaskets are off the engine will need a bottom end rebuild.

As Tidgy says, full rebuild time. No way round this without building something that will quickly fail again.

£3k+ for the job to be done right.

100%. anyone telling you bottom end (crank bearings in particular) don't need doing is clueless and should be avoided.

mate went to a very highly regarded garage ad was told didn't need doing, guess what, wasn't even maped before crank bearings failed

A lot of Subaru main dealers will happily just do the head gaskets of they go, but any specialist worth their salt will always tell you to rebuild the whole lot with new big ends etc once the gaskets go.

Best advice is to do some searching on this site as there is a load of info already here and contact a few recommended specialists to see what they say.

Not to disagree with the advice above, but have you had the engine inspected to confirm head gasket ?
I would at least find the exact problem first before buying a new engine and then take it from there.

Genuine question,
What causes the bottom end failures after a head gasket ?

Completely agree, go to a specialist and have it checked first.

Bottom end failure is normally caused by debris and fuel that have made it into the oil system while the head gasket was failing.
