jack up drivers side,
put oil tray under car
cover headers with plastic bag
use a 1/4 drive/3/8 drive max
after removal get everything as clean as poss
people say to use sealer, but what you do is up to you, i did mine dry but soaked the seal/gasket in engine oil overnight in order to sponge effect the seal as it's nitrile rubber, clean it off and refit. remember the bolts have a shoulder so will only do up so far

I now have the problem of knowing which gasket i need as it seems there is a choice of two for the 1997-1998 v4 impreza turbo and the only way out is to take the rocker cover off and then order a gasket that is the same.

I did mine once and decided it's not worth wasting my time with again and would rather pay someone to do it. Can I do it? Yes.
Would I rather spend the afternoon in the pub while some other poor ******* gets to **** around with it? Yes.
Same as replacing the sump, easy enough to do but can I really be arsed? Definitely not.
And that's coming from someone with a fully equipped workshop, 2 post ramp etc.

Done mine, was all fixed nicely, several thousand miles on it started up again so now I'm just putting up with an occasional whiff. I'd only 'fix' it again if it was really bad.

You are better off paying someone else to do it right.
Then if it does leak soon after you just take it back and get it sorted. Some things are worth saving money on. Others will just cause headaches

Call icp and ask them which part.
I did mine on my new age on Saturday, passenger side is tighter then drivers side.
Use the rough scouring side of a sponge to clean old sealant from the block and get some shop towels to make sure the surface is perfectly dry before refitting the rocker cover.
Change plugs whilst your at it.
