Default High milage

Hello all, thinking of buying a 2.5 WRX but worried about the 150K miles on the clock.
Is this too high?

Thanks

It would worry me regardless of how it's been treated.

If it's a properly cheap car then no harm buying a high miler.
150k on the same engine?
Is it going to be a daily driver,track/weekend toy?
Is it cheap enough for you to justify putting a forged or 2nd had engine in when or if the time comes?

Kudos to ya then fella had it done 150k when you bought it ??

For me, If I had a certain amount of money to spend I'd rather put it into a slightly older, lower mileage car that a newer high mileage car.
It's not just the engine that's 150k remember

My view is, if it's made it to 150k it's obviously a good one and has been well looked after, my 2.0L wagon has just gone through 122k, I used to think anything over 100k was high, but after 4 yrs and 30k of ownership it's still a baby by comparison to some of the ones I have seen lately, it's got another 4yrs to catch up, and judging by the 200k bug in the for sale section it could still be around in 12yrs.

Hard to answer, I bought it based on my mechanical knowledge and experience.

Had no idea about the history of the 2.5, it showed no signs of the alleged issues, and still does not.

Mileage has never been the first thing I look at on a car, history records receipts and look and feel are a lot further up the list.

I have never bought a car with less than 60k on the clock if I recall correctly

+1 milage (like a persons age is nothing) think choosing a liver transplant from a healthy looking 30yo alcoholic vs a man in his 60s that does not drink.

Personally I'd be suspicious off any low mileage hig performance cars as usually they have even been weekend blast toys or track toys.

High milage ones seem to be daily's and therefore had easy motorway lives !

there was a member on here recently, last year or so, discussing his da's 06 WRX which had something like 350k mile on it - and gave next to no bother on just routine servicing

100k mile in UK is what people call high miles, but thats only uk, bit like people in the Isle of Man think a 50k mile car is a high miler!

tramping up and down motorways day in day out at 70-80mph may stick the miles on a car but it'll not hurt it one bit compared to a 30k mile car used in the city

buy on condition & history. assuming you are buying to drive it.

For me, condition and previous history is more important than milage.

I bought my JDM Blobeye STI with 100k miles on the clock, for example. Service history is as thick as a bible, previous owner knew what he was talking about and obviously loved the car. It was a motorway commuter as well.

Now running 414bhp still on a completely standard block. It hasn't burned a drop of oil since I changed it 3k miles ago, nor has it had anything other than routine maintenance

But that's just my 2p.

Like you stated gooch, It all depends on how the Scooby has been looked after and how its been serviced.

If they have been looked after by the owner then they will easily cope with the high mileage without any major problems.

Buying an Impreza turbo with over 60K on it is a risk, ive been building these engines for a long time and I have a stack of cranks here from everything from 2.0 wrx, 2.0 sti, 2.5 sti and 2.5 wrx. The big end bearings wear out as they are much narrower than traditional engines. I always ask what the milage is when I get one in to rebuild and they are usually around 70-90K.
Of course there are loads with much more on but thats what I see day in day out.

Oil changes with quality oil and lots of them, 6 months or 5k is my personal choice but I would say that also depends on use, costs me around £100 each time with one of the best oils money can buy Motul 300v I have been doing this with all my cars for many years, I have had this one for almost 5yrs now 2.0L WRX 122k and counting, take care of them and they last, you'll find the good ones with high miles have been owned by the same person for a few years and they generally know what they are talking about, I'd avoid ones with 6 owners in almost as many years as imo they are less likely to have been loved.

You can change the oil once a week but it still won't change the fact that a car with 150+K on the clock will have more wear than one with half the mileage. Hence, it's more of a risk buying one with high mileage.
If the car is cheap and you're not that fussed if it becomes unreliable then knock yourself out. If you're after a daily and not really in a position to put things right should they go bad then good luck to ya.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not against high mileage cars. I actually own a car with over 200K on the clock !!! But that's not a performance car and I don't use it often.

So as before.... would buying a 150k impreza worry me..... Yes it would. I'd rather buy one at the same value that's a touch older but has less miles on the clock.
If nothing else, when you're bored at least you'll be able to sell it.

Well I disagree, having had a 64k sti let go on me and now running a wrx with almost double that on the clock, I think it's down to no mods and a well looked after engine.

I used to buy on miles now I look at the owner.

Yours was an old classic STI engine was it not... same as mine that let go before 7oK
Mine had a folder of bills for regular oil changes, it didn't save that one though.
