Cant afford a sequential box for my rally car so just wondered if this can be done without too many problems.


Any info would be appreciated.

 

Why would you want to do that, its quite a weak box and a huge task too fit it, would also need a new ecu from an automatic unless you are running a syvecs or similar that could control it.

 

I agree with above its not practical to do and boxes are weaker , can't you buy a sequential shifter I know they do them on holdens

 

Cheers Jay, swapping boxes over isn't a problem and it is running on syvecs,. Didn't know how strong the boxes are. I have a weak left leg which is why im looking to change.

Ok well I am sure all the usual auto people will wade in here, I have owned a few autos now and heres what I can say, if you can get a 4eat auto box from somewhere probably japan or use, you can get it strengthen to almost any degree and in fact I know of a couple of places in the UK who can strengthen it. But, the box will be at least £500 then £2500 for a uprated rebuild, so for 3k you can have a built auto, but, then you will have to get your auto box talking to the car, if you car is newage you can change your speedo to a auto one which tells you what gear your in, quite handy. And then because not many people work with autos you will have to get a mapper, say Bob Rawle, as he knows his autos. The world of autos in the UK is very small. If you get a earlier auto there is no tiptronic option so you need at least a 2000 to 2001 model. In the states they went up to blob eye I think. The most a standard box can take is around the 350bhp mark but don't know how long that would last, 320bhp is safe but again depends on how the box was looked after. Anyway hope that helps.

 

thanks 1999wagon. the rally car is limited with a 34mm restrictor at 305bhp and 500ft/lb torque. So power wise that's ok. It would have to be a tip tronic version as the standard 4eat would be all over the gears accelerating and lifting.

 

what about the stall speed of the torque converter? Also the harshness of gear changes once you increase the line pressure to clutch packs and remove the oil damper restrictions? ive done all this before, then still burnt all the linings off the clutch packs. cant beat a proper mechanical box in my experience

 

torque will destroy the clutch pack and sprag clutches

I personally would install a semi automatic clutch system, these are 2-3k fitted, you keep your gearbox, and you can move it from that car whenever you want, you can still use the clutch if you want but there is a helper system if you need it. A auto won't touch a manual for fun, or tune ability, and the 6 speed boxes are very strong. Look up duck semi auto systems. On you tube there is a aerial atom with it fitted.

I don't know if this link would work for you , my expierence of gbox swaps from man to auto or the other way round or engine swaps they are a lot of hard work and expensive and not always successful , you are better finding a car with what you need fitted as standard , my swap would be an ls3 6.2 v8 in a Scooby and still have four wheel drive

 

On here search sequential conversion kit , I've not read it all it may help

 

Why not use an Audi V8 with the Audi quattro box like I have?

 

With your weak left leg is it possible to get some sort of servo assist on the clutch peddle??

The best engine would be a 2.7 BiTurbo v6 lump, very cheap and very strong. The thought has crossed my mind to bolt one in my car a few times! A lot of work for me just now with two young kids and a house to renovate

 

It would have to be v8 ls3 for me but I don't think it fits and keeps the four wheel drive , with minimal tune mines putting out 500 bhp in a different car , no lag as na can be supercharged to 620 bhp , but I do like the Scooby engine

 

Whats the point of a V8 with no boost!? im not into that at all

 

Keep it every day drive able , I like the idea of a cog driven supercharger as the noise is fantastic but for every day drive not ideal

 

Check the noise out from around 20 seconds in onwards

 

I wouldn't use a supercharger, I would do same as before and use a turbo of two (v8 1uzfe turbo)

 

The supercharger is a much better fit the turbo fits are as expensive and can be a lot of hard work , any boost is good but not great for every day, due to strangely having too much power

 

Turbo is by far the cheapest solution, we did the supra V8 turbo for under £2000 including ecu, injectors, intercooler, boost pipes, turbo, exhaust all hardware etc. How much would a 750hp supercharger cost?

 

The turbo kits on the ls are not that cheap , the company who do them say by the time they are fitted there is not much in it

 

A single turbo was my origonal thought but it's expensive , they don't do a kit so it's all made up by them
