Default 98 Sti will not start

Good evening all.

A couple of weeks ago the power steering/alternator belt decided to give up the ghost on the way home. I managed to make it the 5 miles home albeit with no power steering. I removed the battery as it was totally flat when I got home and put it in charge. The belt was replaced by a neighbour, and I replaced the battery but now the engine turns over but will not start.

I can hear the fuel pump prime when the ignition is on, but when I turn the engine over it cranks (it does sound slower than normal) but will not start.

I've tried a brand new battery. I have checked the ground wire connection has not corroded, but still no joy.

Does anyone have any ideas where to look next?

Cheers Kot.

Have you checked the fuses in the engine bay fuse box? Best checking the simple stuff first. There's a possibility that the crank sensor has failed too.

Yes. I forgot to mention I've checked the fuses. I did wonder if it may be the crank sensor. Or I thought maybe removing the battery may have goosed the immobiliser some how.

I wouldn't think so, I've had the battery out of mine loads of times even for extended periods and it hasn't caused any problems.

Can you do the diagnostic test on it and see what it brings up?

No. I'll try the diagnostics tomorrow as I'm working tonight.

Thanks Kot

Did you check the fuses for continuity with a meter? Sometimes a visual check will not always be 100%

Usually it wouldn't even turn over or the fuel pump prime if the immobiliser was buggered.

Sounds like it's getting fuel, but, no spark.

Crank or cam sensor would stop it from sparking. Check and make sure the crank sensor plug is on properly, it could have been disturbed when the aux belt was replaced.

Right. I've checked the fault codes and it throws up none. I have checked the fuses in the engine bay with a multimeter and they are okay. Still no joy

Have you checked what mickywrx said?
What year is the car, could be coilpack, can you borrow one to see if it's that? Or 2nd hand are cheap and would rule out the coil.

I have checked the wiring on the crankshaft and it seems okay. If it was faulty would it not throw up a 11 fault code on the diagnostics?

Jeeze something sounds terribly wrong in that second video. You weren't trying to bump start the car at any stage were you?

That was my first suspicion but I've tried it with no belt on and it's the same.

Could be over tight belt as swisstony says.
On the 2nd vid it looks and sounds like the starter is cranking but engine not as there is no movement of the engine. Does sound like the starter drive gear is broken or maybe the solenoid sticking.
Try tapping the starter solenoid with a hammer whilst it's been cranked or take off the starter motor and have a look at the gear.

No unfortunately not. I have it booked into the garage for next week. I was going to try and sort it myself and use the gf's car in the meantime but the turbo went bang on her Audi on Sunday so I am down to the work van for transport at the minute.

Yes I've checked the new battery. Ive used a brand new leisure battery. One thing I have noticed is that when I tap the crankshaft sensor with a spanner. I can hear the fuel pump prime?.

The fault codes don't throw up any faults for the crankshaft sensor.

Couldn't agree more, not for high amperage draw! Meant for long lasting low current draw.

It's a big *** battery from an industrial backup generator, 850cca 100ah. Still no joy. I have cleaned off all contacts, and have ordered a new crankshaft sensor just to eliminate that possibility.
