Default HELP!!! Please

Hello I'm looking for some help.
I own a JDM subaru impreza wrx sti and have been told the big end has gone.. The local garage said it will be around 2.5k to get fix but a straight replacement engine would be the cheaper option.. Only problem is I don't know what I'm looking at.
So first question is any ideas what series engine this is?
Secondly does anyone know where to get one from?
My brother inlaw is willing to fit it as long as it's a straight swap. He doesn't want to have to mess with the wiring loom but is will to fit my existing part like the intercooler etc

First of all get yourself along to a Subaru specialist rather than your 'local garage' and talk it over with them. A second hand engine would probably be a cheaper option but you could so easily be buying more trouble. Unless your engine has destroyed itself I would go with the rebuild option, but this is not a job for any old garage. Whilst your engine is out you might as well have a forged rebuild, but this will cost you north of £3k if it's done properly. Possibly well worth it with your car though.

Subaru4You at Newbury are top guys at engine building, you could give them a call.
