Angry Cuts out randomly - WRX 2000 classic ?!

Hi Everyone, im new to the forums,
although using them for the last 5 years ive only just registered <!

A Fountain of knowledge here and hope someone can help !!

So 2 months ago i brought my second impreza ! its great and much faster than my old turbo 2000

So all was fine two weeks in and i start getting cut outs,
seems to be if the car is already warm, however it does it at othe times to, there in no consistancey could be fine for the whole day !?

so it idles rough then cuts out, After 4 /10 restarts (which it fires up first and every time then stalls again) it will then run fine although there was never an issue !

So i have checked the engine light it said knock sensor, heres what i have done in order <

Sea foamed
Changed fuel filter
changed spark plugs
changed knock sensor (was buggered and very split)
cleaned MAF
Cleaned what i think is the idle control valve
Reset ecu

and its still doing it ?

No codes so far :/

the only two other issues i know of are:
A windscreen leak which is possibly going behind the dash (Replacement next week)
And the vacuum hose coming of the back of the boost solinoid is hanging free, the end it hard and brittal like its snapped of somewhere but can i find where it is ment to be ?! no

Thanks in advance for all, and any help !

That vac hose certainly will cause issues. You'd need to order some new hose and start replacing it really and go from there.

It's hard to tell from that photo, does the boost solenoid have two hoses attached?

yes one angled at the back and one straight from the bottom < 2*
its the rear/side angled one thats not connected,
most of the other hoses have already been replaced with newer blue ones, (prior to me owning it)

ive been trying to look at images but hard to decipher some of them and none exactly like mine

Thanks for your response <>
as i say it worked fine when i brought it perhaps this pipe has gone since <

car runs smoother from all the bits done but still that judder, kangaroo then stall.
Annoying in traffic

Mine was doing that when I bought it and I also found some bad vacuum hoses. Once I replaced them and reset the ECU all has been well since. Where does that vac hose go to on the other end?

Try refitting that hose to the rear of the solenoid, maybe cut a little bit off to get a decent seal

sorry one end is connected to the back of that solenoid and the other end near the engine has come of < its not to long near the left hand side of the inlet manifold, the hose has no sort of memory which is a shame

This should help. Also be wary of cheap vac hose. It's often just washer jet hose and is too stretchy. You can get harder walled silicon vac hose designed for the job which is what you want. I lost some boost using cheapo stuff before.

If you don't have the hose attached to the intake pipe then you will be drawing unmetered air into that pipe which will probably mess with the idle and fueling to a small degree. Will also allow dirt into the turbo/engine.

Great thanks for these images ! makes it much clearer

I have neglected to mention there is a turbo smart manual boost controller < should have mentioned that sooner, would this be any part of the equation ?
I have not touched the boost controller

its late and dark ill get to it tomorrow, and see if theres another open end or a T there ill check the restrictor pill also, the hoses do seem a little on the squishey side,
ill change them out, although when i first had the car there were no issues so maybe it is just the hose of, the car was really lumpy today after cleaning the MAF so think will replace that to

Thanks for all the help

I would ditch the manual controller and plumb it all back to standard. You will want a boost gauge too so you can see what it's doing. Do you know what it boosts to now?

If it's been properly set to the manual controller then the oe solenoid will be unused so that will explain why its not connected properly. But you don't know if its been done properly and to be honest manual controllers are a cheap mod that is not recommended at all. It may be that there was an issue with the OE setup so they fitted the manual controller as a bodge.

Also its a grey import so was it ever mapped for UK fuel? This is the issue with older Impreza's unless they are standard. Too many previous owners have "modified" them often badly.

i may return that back to normal then,
Although the engine was rebuilt by Alan Jefferies in plymouth and had a new turbo and map done at the time, assumed that it was all done together <
It boosts to 20 psi on my gauge

Sounds like the wastegate is stuck closed all the time. 20psi is waaaaaaay too much! It'll be closed because of either the bleed valve being wide open or because the vac hoses have gone to shït. I'd advise you go over them carefully and get rid of the bleed valve.

If you are close to Alan drive it carefully to him (stay off boost) and get him to look it over. It's doesn't sound like it's set up right at the mo. I would lay off the boost in case you are running too much. It will feel quick until the engine goes!
