Default check engine?

Hi have a 1999 non turbo wagon which I love to bits but it has the Check Engine light come on it has done it for the last few years but more so when its cold. Seems like choke related as the engine kinda runs a little rough when the light is on. I have diagnostic equipment but at that age there is no ocd socket. Any ideas?

There is 2 black and 2 green connectors under the dash that are disconnected. Not sure which you connect up but then you can count the flashes and that will give you the fault code. If you youtube it you can see and on Google you can get the list of codes
