car runs fine for a week then something happens then its off again for a week or so
iv got:
misfires at low RPM
cutting out when out of gear
low idle

loss of power
im convinced its electrical but i just cant find what's causing it

Sounds like a loose connection or loose earth.
It will be a nightmare to find, start by cleaning and tightening all connections at the battery, then look at the bodywork and engine earthing points.
After that......it's just tracing wires, I'm afraid.

yes it has been a bit off a mission. all the battery connections are nice and tight. iv got an additional negative to chassis ground.
i might just add some around the engine and back to the battery

yes and no
like i said the problem is intermittent.
i did find a ground that was slightly loose on the top off the manifold
i was able to rotate the ring terminal slightly. i cleaned this off and re tightend and the car got better
but then a month latter it started happening again.
im now suspecting an alternator as my lights seem to be getting a bit flickery. iv got an oscilloscope and spare alternator in the post
