Default gear linkage question

Hi all,

Im thinking over re furbing the gear linkage on my 93 wrx. The side to side resistance from the neutral position is is not sloppy but it is weak.

ive had it up on the ramps and this spring is in place:

I removed it to verify its function and the centre to left resistance (i.e 1st and 2nd) went floppy, however the centre to right resistance (i.e 5th) was not, it remained unchanged.

Im pretty sure I can firm up the centre to left with a new spring and bushes.
My question is what controls the centre to right resistance?
