Default Clutch..... HOW MUCH!!

Right, haven't been on here for a while..... apologies!

I am getting some prices to supply & fit a new STANDARD clutch to the Type R (Going to keep it til the summer at least, what with the current climate etc....)
Anyway.... got my first quote..... £950.00 + VAT! WHAT!!?
Apparantly, the Turbo scoobies have "Dual" something flywheels that normally always need changing too, and these are about £400 + VAT! Has ANYONE heard of these types of Flywheels (they are on Fords aswell?)
I was expecting a possibly higher than normal price due to it being a Type R, but this has nothing to do with it... its ALL turbo versions!??

Anyone have any highly recommended garages??

Thanks

If you have to ask a price of someting, then its probably too much!

Hi Em, Xtremes do a road spec exedy (same price as a standard scoob one) with a flywheel exchange (for a skimmed one) for about £500 fitted if I remember correctly.

Thanks, just been on their website, and tried to call, but must be on lunch so I have sent them an email asking for a price, although their site does quote about £500 for an Exedy and skimmed flywheel, which is what I was after (clutch wise) but what difference does a skimmed flywheel make then??

clutch fit on pretty much any scoob is circa £750 ... unless you get it fitted somewhere not so reputable but then you could be in for further problems.

my dad just got an uprated exedy with 6.3kg flywheel (standard is about 12kg) from aztec performance on here for £399. Then been quoted £200 to fit at a mates garage. speak to bob'5 on here about the clutch parts and then any reputable garage will be able to fit it for you.

a skimmed flywheel just enables a better contact with a new clutch plate than existing flywheel, thats all. the surface is just machined slightly to take out any scores, ridges or warp imperfections.

a bit like changing the brake disks, when changing the pads.

also less chance of judder and probably a couple more reasons, but for the work involved in changing the clutch is deffo a worthwhile option.
Xtreme just use exchange flywheels and will then get yours skimmed ready to go on someone elses car, thats all

do not confuse this with lightened flywheels, although if you want to be picky, yes the flywheel will be some 0.000001 kg lighter, i guess

Thanks for that!! I'm not fussed about lightened ones... my car is about as modified as a blade of grass, so I wouldn't think it'll make much difference??

Let me know if you want it, and I'll PM his number. He's based in Chigwell.

you'd be surprised. the flywheel is a fair chunk of metal which is heavy. the lighter this is the easier the engine will be to rev which will help with acceleration as there's less mass to get moving. but iirc they can put extra stress on your gearbox and diff if pushing hard due to how much easier the engine will rev.

Just don't follow all the sheep and go to one of these so called amazing independent places that will do it for peanuts. They go bust, clutch breaks, you have no comeback. Either that or you end up dealing with an un-hinged person and end up forking out for more than just clutch labour charges

Personally I would recommend that you use Xtreme ... they have been around for years and years and have outperformed all these ****ey fad places. Workmanship is excellent and they are the only garage outside Subaru themselves that I would ever let near any of my cars!

i on the other hand wouldn't let xtreme touch any of my cars anymore. that's mainly to me not liking someone there though but not all down to that. at the end of the day Em it's up to you who you take it to. Most on here are happy with xtreme and mocom etc.

another garage that i'm more than happy with using is bennetts bmw in south woodham. mates have used them to look after their pride and joy e30 m3 and various other cars. i've used them for work on rs turbos as well as bmw's and also on my scoobs and have always been very happy.

not liking someone doesn't mean that their workmanship is not up to scratch. Most of my scoobs are brand new and worth around £35k with what I have done to them so for me to let an independent garage even touch the bonnet catch is testament to what I think about them.

Not doubting that this bennetts place have done the business for you but for a subaru I would only ever send it to a subaru specialist. These things are pretty damn complicated and the last thing you want is to fork out clutch money and then fork out more to have it re-done.

just trying to look out for you ems ... better to spend a little more sometimes to save potential fortunes in the future

Does having to have them re-shelled add to their value?

you want to be taking them to a main dealer then so that you can keep the warranty

without slagging them off i did have something done on my scoob that i wasn't happy with and ended up sourcing the same aprt from elsewhere to get it sorted out. won't go into details as it was a fair while ago. but it was enough that it could have caused det in my engine.

Em, for basic servicing and replacement items, then Xtreme are prob as good as it gets locally.

having owned 7 imprezas now I never really saw a problem. 1 accident 5 years ago, fully protected no claims, and uber cool discounts whenever I buy

FYI no car I've ever had needed to be re-shelled.
