Mocom Magic Dust
Just got back from a day with Zak and all I can say is F**king Wow... sometimes Wow isnt strong enough !!!
If you had read the last instalment of my quest for more power and responsiveness, you will have seen that we fitted (well I say we, but really he ) a fuel pressure regular and 255 Walbro Fuel Pump back in January and were ready to map it when the laptop and car decided to play old married couples and stop talking to each other.
This left me in the position of having plenty of fuel pressure that was basically forcing the car to run rich rather than adjusting the ecu to shorten the duty cycles. Therefore at the end of that session we wound the fuel pressure back to normal and vowed to do it another day.
Today was that other day and just in time for the Track Day at Snetterton
I havent had a chance to do a dyno comparison on today's set-up but I can FEEL it is much better. (and sounds nicer too)
The extra fuel pressure has had the required effect and given a little more room to exploit the engine by upping the boost about .2 bar up on what it was making before. This along with extra Cam Timing to help spool up and ignition advance has been put in without the hint of Det or problems... well apart from blowing off the intercooler hose once (i had tightened it up in my non mechanic way)
The net result of all this is that the car is transformed AGAIN - i didnt think it would be possible after the night and day transformation before, but Zak has sprinkled his magic dust again on it and it feels a different car.
There were several points during the day where lesser mappers would have called it a day as being Good Enough and to be honest I would have gone away happy, but he was having fun working on it and it is always a shame to stop someone having fun making my car do what I want it to do where I want it to do it
I will be doing a road dyno run tomorrow on my normal road to compare with previous figures/curves and will post that up as a comparison.
I have learned a lot today as he explained all 14 iterations of the map to me as to why each change in each map was done and what impact it would have on the overall feel and performance.

I will be doing an overlay of before and after runs on the same stretch of road and by the look of today, the weather conditions will be identical aswell between the two runs.
Torque is very important, it now kicks me in the back big style and all happens sooooo fast that I cant floor it in first really
Being a little **** about stats etc, and for the sake of argument I will be logging acceleration (metres per sec) through the rev ranges in 2nd, 3rd and 4th to see if I can find the ideal gear change points.
This will be interesting I think.... or maybe its just me

based on 16% transmission loss: ie wheel figures / 0.84

Will get it on a proper dyno shortly and double check my readings to make sure I am not overinflating these but on a straight comparison it is 31bhp at the wheels higher than last week.
The car was last dyno'd pre decat at 333bhp at the flywheel - so thinking that 370 bhp is about right.

Thats a stunning result from what is really just a well optimised UK 2.5 STi.
Duncans car has no secret spec turbo or hidden tuning aids.
Just a well setup UK sti with breathing and fueling mods.
324bhp and 368 lbft AT THE WHEELS!!!!

wheel horse power indeed.... but there are so many differences between what the US called WHP and what is the same here because of compensation factors that we use here that the US doesnt and vice versa.... age old argument
I am happy with 311 to be honest frayz - the 3rd gear graph was a bit spikey for my liking but the in gear acceleration seems pretty good
Test done in 4th Gear - In Gear Acceleration:
40 - 60mph = 2.8 seconds
50 - 70mph = 2.5 seconds
60 - 80mph = 2.5 seconds
70 - 90mph = 2.8 seconds
80 -100mph = 3.2 seconds

30 - 50mph = 2.1 seconds
40 - 60mph = 1.8 seconds
50 - 70mph = 1.9 seconds

Cracking figures mate..
Mines clearly much laggier than that due to the 2ltr pushing a 20g but hopefully it will be no differnet when the MD goes on.
Just gotta decide whether to go for the H (420bhp) or to run the slightly laggier T (450bhp+)
I wanna wait and see how Mikes one responds to an S as his will also be on a 2ltr... The S is an older design with more lag than that of the T but should be a good indication to spool time on a 2ltr

Another turbo is not an option for me really at the mo as the VF43 seems to be working quite well and changing turbos would bring forward another limiting factor in the pistons...and possibly rods/bearings.
This is about as far as I can confortably go for the moment.... maybe sneak another 10 points or so but that is about it.
Mike's is certainly looking like it will serve him very well and with the mods to that it should show the way for a few people

Yeah.. i could run the T and she would probably be okay up to around 450bhp but i couldnt produce to torque with my rods.
A genuine 410bhp would still make for a damm fast road car but would i be happy stopping there?
If i was to go and build mine with proper rods then id just end up going 2.5 and then it would all get silly

Yeah.. i could run the T and she would probably be okay up to around 450bhp but i couldnt produce to torque with my rods.
A genuine 410bhp would still make for a damm fast road car but would i be happy stopping there?
If i was to go and build mine with proper rods then id just end up going 2.5 and then it would all get silly

I know we are limited by rods and bearings on mine and i will need to see how she performs on wednesday, before i decide if this is a route i need to take.
That said, given that most of my track time has been spent with 250Bhp, i have a lot of learning to do with the 400+ that the car will have shortly, so the additional boost and torque that could be achieved with the rods and bearings, could prove accademic till i've had a chance to really push her hard.....
Oh well wednesday will be a big power day for many reasons!

Lets see what the S produces. As you guy's say, it will be laggier than the new T, but is also supposed to flow more top end.
I know we are limited by rods and bearings on mine and i will need to see how she performs on wednesday, before i decide if this is a route i need to take.
