Default Mpg on a modified impreza

Hello all,
I have not owned my Impreza long, but I have noticed that the mpg is far worse than I expected. Average is around 18 with the most I can achieve on a run being around 22 on a run sitting at 60mph!
The previous owner was not the owner who carried out the modifications and as such did not know much about them.
The turbo is a garret so has been changed at some point, the previous owner claimed the car had a custom map by ECU Tech, (it has switchable power via the rear window heater)
Can anyone explain my poor fuel economy?! (I have owned thirsty cars in the past r32, 330ci, but this is on another level!
Thanks all

Should have mentioned that the sti is a 2004 and is running an "estimated" 350bhp, all as I know is its fast.

I was hoping for 28mpg on a run, I would be ecstatic with 30. But 22 is un sustainable!

It pops and bangs a lot on over run, prehapse a sign of running rich?

I don't see the point of the mpg threads on imprezas tuned or not, you bought the wrong car.

Go figure lol.

Low 20's and even lower if driven hard are the norm. That's why I have a Scenic as a daily drive.

Cheers for the replies, I am doing quite a few business miles at the moment, which has got me thinking about Mpg, I'm not usually too concerned!

It would seem that 22mpg even at 60mph is normal ish?

Yes it is the 6spd.

So no one has managed to get even 28 out of their Sti?

I think I will need a diesel daily drive if I'm going to keep the scoob

Don't know what mine does and don't really care. The grin factor and the noise are more important.

you wish ...if you can get over 20 mpg that is good going !

My E90 M3 average 17mpg and my previous E60 M5 average 11.5 mpg ( that is what one calls thirsty!! ), my P1 running 480-500 bhp only get over 20 mph if I drive it sensibly !

im running a 09 330s with fully forged block mapped to 360hp and id say 22 is pretty standard, although you can get 24mpg out of it when just potering around and motroway cruising.

17-19 is usual when giving it the guts which lets be honest is why we all bought these types of cars.

i was a bit different im very good at crashing RWD cars so these seemed like a good option for my lack of driving skill

If you want to drive one of these economically you need a boost gauge, just keeping it below 3k rpm is not enough, you need to be able to see when your boosting in every gear, if your clever with the gas pedal and over run you can get quite good mpg.

First thing you need to do is take away the pops and bangs as it's over fueling that gives you them on over run so your burning fuel when you could be saving it.

Mine is a WRX PPP but I average 28mpg with mixed driving when i'm being sensible and 34+ on a run at 3k rpm which equals 80mph, but you have to pay attention to the boost gauge.

If its any use I would get 25mpg on a run and around 22mpg normally in my standard P1.

It'll soon not be standard so I'll see what it may fall to.

I've just done first full tank. Around 100miles town and 220 motorway. 28mpg over the tank.

That's on a 2002 wrx running approx 270-280bhp.

So expecting 28mpg on a long run is not unreasonable, as I said the best I can manage on a long run is 23!

It must be the way it is mapped.. What's the best way to check if the map is to blame?

The secret really is in throttle control and boost gauge, you'll be surprised how wrong you can be thinking your driving economically.

I can't see how I can drive any more economically, 23 mpg is sitting at 60mph in 6th Gear!

I do have a boost gauge, the car is quite laggy bellow 3.5k so it's easy to drive without boost

My 05 Wrx running at 286 bhp (obviously mapped lol) will do 30mpg on a long run on motorway (best) and 26mpg normal driving to work - a bit of 40mph to 60. Not sure if an Sti can achieve these figures? The sti boys here will know.

Yes but he has a sti with 6 spd box so wouldn't get the wrx mpg figures, he's getting about right for his car IMO.

I feel my wrx is fairly bad on fuel, I heard people seem to be able to get around 230ish miles to a tank.
Was expecting it to be slightly better than my evo anyway which id normally get about 200 to a tank with mixed driving and giving it abit of welly of roundabouts now and again.

Currently just pass 80miles to half a tank. Best ive had to a tank so far is 190miles with same driving ways as my evo, although with Scooby being more laggy, find it easier to keep off boost so id of expected it to be slightly better.

Will most likely get another remap soon anyways see if can be improved at all

Make sure the brakes are nt binding!!its all about the smiles per miles im afraid i run an
l reg micra and 02 audi a4tdi as daily drives could nt afford to run my scoob as a daily driver.

don't believe brakes are binding, just passed any MOT and nothing was said. Day I drove it home 170miles were motorway, and only achieved 250-260 from that tank.

From what ive gather people generally say impreza's are a tad better on fuel than what evo's are. Ran the evo fine as a daily for 16months.

Have a feeling the pops and bangs aren't helping, specially with it popping between 2.5k-4k on overrun
