Tactrix will allow you to make adjustments to your current ECU, you dont buy maps , rather tailor your current ecu to suit any mods

mucho reading required

as a start :

It's quite possible and not to be feared at all
I've recently been sent a map to have a look at , done by a so called professional mapper and it was shocking
I doubt an DIY amateur could be any worse
Study hard , read as much info as possible and take your time
Small changes to start and go from there

i know there are risks
running lean will run hot ect. could over boost potentially ect. i could end up with det which will ruin the engine fairly quickly

i was more looking for a bit more indepth idea
what causes the above problems ect and how are they resolved ect
what ECU parameters and variables are linked to which problems?

with no disrespect to scoobynet, those questions will be answered faster on

geekmapped, romraider, NASIOC, evolutionM

granted not all subaru specific , but very clued up on various types of ECU calibration with romraider probably the best for your OS tactrix stuff

bad noodles guide is pretty good and the bits it doesnt explain it links to sources that do.

im digesting a lot of it myself at the minute myself, as i fancy a go with the ESL software as soon as i get the engine back in

Bad noodles guide is excellent
The key is make very small changes and watch what effect the changes are having
Don't just start mapping
Maybe start by doing some logging and see what's happening
With things like afr vs boost , you can log a multitude of things
It helps you understand what's actually going on and when
And will also give you information on your starting point
Which is so important ,
You must make sure everything is as perfect as it can possibly be before you start
Example if your seeing a very rich or lean spot in a certain area or misfires ,rectify them while the ecu is on the standard map and with the car in standard trim if poss because
if you don't and think " hey I'll map it out " , all you will end up doing is chasing your tail
The big difference between DIY and a pro mapper is being able to identify a map issue and a general running issue a lot easier and quicker ( usually )
