Default ESL Opinion

Just purchased my esl board and tried to run straight out the box but have problems on higher RPM on boost the car shakes and almost cuts it out? Not wanting to run high boost about 0.6 bar?

Yeah i want to but i am just double checking everything before i start messing around with stuff so i want to start simple and get the car to run as normal. So from what i have learnt i should change the boost target map to this?

Bud , you have entered the world of self mapping , it won't run right straight away , you will learn what helps and what doesn't , if you want low boost then set your duty cycles to 0 and this will give actuator pressure only

Sorry I am literally brand new to this (noob) so dont shoot me down for saying this but i just wana not blow my car up basically aha.

Would you know why it would be shaking under boost at higher RPM? Bit confused tbh and when you say duty cycles to 0 that is the boxes on the right to 0?

I'm still not sure if you're on the wind up or not mate

But 1st place to start is,learn the basics, what do you know about a turbo?
Learn what a wastegate it and what it does.

Have you done any data logging,do you know what that is?
And when I suggested you make small changes, that didn't mean changing the whole boost target table to 0.6bar.

AHAHA no im generally lost, good with all the mechanics side of things and wiring but when it comes to looking at numbers i just want to get the car to run, as i said i was going to do ALS but thats on 97 up and im on 93 so thought i would start out by getting the boost to 0.6 and making it run smooth

I'm not sure why you want to target less than stock boost with 0.6

Have you thought about going on the ESL course? There's one in November I think.
Would be a great start.

The boost target map is a guide for what you want it to be, it doesnt make it this by putting say, 1.5 bar in there, the duty cycles control what boost you actually get. (the box on the right )

As your a total Noob ;-) , id set the duty cycles (box on the right ) to 0, this will give you actuator pressure only ( o.5 or 0.6 i think it is ? ) Then, you can increase the duty cycles to see what setting gets you a higher boost reading, either via your boost gauge or data logging.

Along with this connect your Det cans up and listen for that crispy bacon frying sound (hopefully you never hear it ), if you do, increase your AFR richness and also once you have done this, add a bit of advance timing in and see if you get a better responding car without hearing that bacon sound

its trial and error , but as said, read up and the basics of a wastegate , timing of an engine and go from there

Do plenty of data logging and log the perameters that you want to work on.
Don't log all the parameters at once.
If working on boost for example, log TP,RPM,Load, wgdc, speed and boost.

You could book a dyno for a few hours so your eyes can be on the laptop whilst live mapping,or simply datalog using an appropriate stretch of road.

As well as having detcans, you want a wideband AFR and boost gauge.

Well for sorting out my shaking what should i be logging? Not sure whether it is my boost problems or fuel/air problems and not sure how to work that out.

Got a boost gauge and i should be able to get a wideband AFR in a few days.

Leave everything as it came(stock) and log what I've suggested for boost, also log knock events and IAM.
Take a 4th gear pull from around 1k-7k RPM(depending on the road/track you're on)
The shaking might be from boost spikes/overboost?
Take a look at the log file and learn from what you are seeing/hearing/feeling

Is your cel lit up then?
Have you tried clearing then taking for a drive to see if they come back?

I would of thought these were new codes as the ecu has been removed to fit the ESL recently ? But hopefully old codes if not

That's a lot of sensors to go down.
Did you fit the ESL board yourself or did Andy fit?
Have you changed any of the map and drove the car?

Yeah the cel has been lit up for months so i know its not the ecu causing it, idle has been f**ked since i put the engine in and boost has always been a bit funny.

Cleared the codes and they just come straight back so going to get myself some new parts.

The best option is to book yourself onto one of the esl mapping courses. Is an absolute bargain for what you get learned. Like you I was a mapping noon, motorsport engineer graduate but electrics and mapping numbers meant squat to me.

Also from what I learned on the course the 92-96 board comes running the v4 still map straight from the box so will.give an increase of around 70bhp but would obviously need mapping. First thing Andy did for me directly after the course was to knock the duty cycle right down to prevent damage and have been logging since with only a little increase in AFR to eliminate some knock detection. Any issues I would contact esl but readin the manual before hand will prevent Andy telling you sarcastically what he and Spencer spent hours writing as a manual

Now the mapping course is a payable optional extra it's the only way to get information out of Andy , shame as he used to be contactable and answer questions he said he would when purchasing his software before he offered the mapping courses .

This sounds like it's more mechanical than mapping.

Check the plumbing of vac pipes.

I was lazy and nipped one with a jubilee clip, threw up 3 fault codes. MAF sensor, MAP sensor and crank sensor.

Also check your coil packs. OEM early ones are prone to cracking, and they only last about 10 years before they do.
