I know on my 97 ECU its pressed in to connector strips that are soldered to the main ECU. If you see black strips between the ESL board and the main ECU then it will come apart, but be careful.
When I fitted my esl there were various smd's that needed removing so just unplugging the board would not work. V3/4 ecu ie 97/98.
Yeah, I imagine the original ECU wouldn't be any use any more. If he's transferring it to another board (can't think why) then it should be ok if the same smd parts at removed as per the instructions.

She lol and it's being swapped because I bought a maf off here which had a dead short across it burnt out my loom and ecu which was nice
No was green couldn't beleive it not sure why it isn't fused but yeah it did enough damage I just hope rest of loom is ok as I've made up a new loom for maf sensor now

Thats the reason i kept my J1 resistor, just in case i need to remove the ESL and re-use the Z4 ecu .
i did originally use a donor 7D ecu but that went pop so had to "amend" my precious Z4 lol
narelle, the ESL should not be soldered directly to the ECU, if it is, thats not quite the correct way to install it, there isnt a wrong way as such but the board should be installed into the I/C Socket which is soldered onto the board.
