Default Gearbox failure, what next?

Hi lads,

Bought my first subaru impreza last week.
And this week the gearbox decided to commit suicide.

It's the Impreza 2000 Turbo non-import R-redge (1997?).

It was grinding badly in first and second, third gear was a complete racket.
It's at the garage now and it throws you out of third gear even if you try.
Mechanics said the bearings have gone and thrown themselves into the works, causing all sorts of mischief.

My question is, what do I do now?

I need to buy a new gearbox but I'm not sure whether to go standard or upgrade to a stronger gearbox with matching rear diff.

It has been modified but I have no idea whats been done or what the current torque or horsepower is.

My mechanic said the gearbox number is 32000e160 and he wasn't sure whether it was the "vn" or "bn" gearbox.

If I did upgrade the gearbox and rear diff, my following questions are:

- What is the part number for the sti gearbox and rear diff? (so I know I'm getting the right parts)
- Would the front drive shafts meet up to the sti gearbox properly?
- Would I need the sti prop shaft?
- Would I need the sti clutch?
- Could I fit the bug-eyed gearbox and rear diff?

If I didn't choose to upgrade and kept it standard, my other questions are:

- What is the part number for the standard gearbox?
- Should I change or upgrade the clutch?
- If I upgrade the clutch, what would you guys recommend?

Any help would be great chaps as I'm looking very forward to getting this back on the road ASAP.

This is my first Subaru and I can't wait to get her running perfectly.

Thanks once again,

James

your gearbox code will start with the letters TY if its 754 thats good if its 752 thats not so good - its as simple as that - you have an option to go to the very strong later 6 speed but this is an expensive road to go down.
