Question UK 2000 gearbox Question

Evening all this is not my car but my mates son Ben who has recently picked up a V plate UK 2000, the car in general seems fine but the gearbox bearings are noisy in Bens words..... Never having gearbox issues myself its not a subject I am familiar with.

First question is this an easy fix or what could be causing the excessive noise when driving, I believe 2nd may be a bit tight as well while changing.

Second question is in regard a new age 6 speed box, will this drop straight in or will there have to be mods carried out in other areas.

How much is a refreshed 5 speed box these days?

How much is a 6 speed new age box from a breaker?

The car is running a fmic but I do not know what turbo or clutch is in the car so I am thinking maybe circa 320 bhp in power terms, if the old owner has given it some beans maybe that's what has caused wear in the OEM box.

As said its not a familiar area for me so any input is good and I'll pass it on to Ben.

Cheers
Si

i would change the oil to syntrax and see if it quitens down, noisy bearings arent really that much of an issue.

a six speed conversion is likely to be about 2k and requires the rear diff, if you buy ben that can you be my dad too i need some car bits

I did say a 6 speed would make his toes curl I personally don't think it's worth it in this situation let alone the massive cost

Tommy your not bouncing on my knee that I can assure you

Full 6 speed conversions can be gotten for less than £2K.

Jap one went for £1250 recently, everything included for the swap.

My last 5 speed, I'm on my 3rd, was ITRO £900 fitted inc new clutch. That's a TY754 cased box.

still needs to replace clutch and labour costs though, overkill really for a turbo 2000

No labour charges as he's a trainee mechanic but Subaru is an area he knows little about but I agree in respect of what the base car is and value of it.

You missed my edit, Dan.

You can use a 5 speed clutch with a 6 speed box, just not the other way round IIRC.

Still probably looking at around £6-700, for a rebuilt 5 speed, maybe more.

if you sourced a UK non-DCCD 6spd it would almost drop straight in and as Mickey mentions the 5spd clutch can be utilised no issue

having said that a std late 754 g/box is fairly reliable normally particuarly in a <350bhp car IMO
a lot depends on driving style and wether you do drag style launches, etc.

Thanks Alyn I'll pass it all on, I agree the late boxes are quite strong I think a lot of people do underrate them really.

gearing is different and also its a JDM spec box so he will need to "match" the rear diff ratio to his UK car..............

step backwards IMO

I did wonder ok I'll let him know that Alyn.
There should be plenty of UK one's about he just needs to find the right one for the easiest and cheapest fix I think in reality.

the UK cars from the very first leggy turbo's through the new-age's all used the same basic ratios and rear diff set-up, so he simply requires a UK box and preference would be for a 754 flavour as he now has (be aware that around 03/04(memory??) there was a change to male front d/shafts rather then the more traditional female shafts..........)
