Default 53 plate Sti prodrive 4th gear crunch!! Advice needed please..

Hi everyone,
I haven't been on the forum for a while now but I need you guys expertise on this query. My 4th gear has been crunching on mid-high rev downshifting, going up through the box in high revs is fine. I changed the oil to syntrax hoping it would solve the issue, unfortunately it hasn't..

This is where I'm looking for advice from all you Impreza boffins out there!! Do I try another oil? Or get the gearbox out and replace 4-5-6 synchros for the upgraded carbon coated ones from Subaru? The car only has 60k with full service history. Has anyone tried to get this work done by Subaru?(Recall/warranty issue) It seems to be a common problem after trawling the Internet for information, and the part has been upgraded by Subaru for an obvious reason!! The originals are soft junk..

Thanks for taking the time to read this guys and all opinions submitted will be considered.

Cheers Ian

Replace the synchros. An oil change does not help! I've had mine replaced with the carbon ones by David @ API

Don't think you stand a chance with it being done under any sort of warranty...

That's what I'm thinking mate. Just hard to accept I'm possibly looking at a £1000 bill to sort a synchro issue that Subaru clearly know about!! Why upgrade them to carbon coated if there wasn't an issue?!

How much was your repair at API? How bad was your crunching before replacement? Did you replace 4-5-6th synchros?

Cheers

Can't remember the exact price as I had other stuff done at the same time and it was 2 years ago! It was so bad that I had 4th gear replaced as well as 4-5-6 synchros.

I tried changing the oil to thicker stuff and it made zero difference. The synchro was ruined, anything above 4krpm and it was chrunching.

Ok mate, thanks for the reply..

Just wondering how bad mine can be?! Only crunches on mid-high rev downshifts. Upshifts are no problem at any rev range. Hopefully someone on here has had or seen similar and can let me know costs/damage that the gearbox had.

Thanks again

The average cost to repair a six speeder with crunchy synchro is coming up around £800 + VAT [ £960.00 inc ] if we get the box alone. If we have a car, add another £300.00 + VAT [ £360.00 inc ] to remove the box and install it after.

Carriage for a box only from Dundee to us and back would be circa £130.00 + VAT [ £ 156.00 inc ]

It is better done sooner rather than later, however, if there is damage to the synchro teeth on the gear and the ring and the synchro sleeve, they all need to be changed or the left over damaged part will damage the new parts. Never vice versa.

Thanks for the info David, much appreciated!!
Looks like its box out time..thanks for the offer and prices but it will be far cheaper for me to have it done closer to home, namely tayside transmissions-£250-300+parts for rebuild. I just need to get the box to them.

Cheers
