Question

hiya

the place where u check and fill up the coolant is Mayonnaisy...
furry up the sides...

the coolant was low once.. after a service...
that was about 5k miles ago... filled it up.. doesnt seem to have lost much

car is using *some* oil.

theres some black flecks... but thats the same in a 16k MY00 car.. so not worried about that..

just this Mayonnaisy yellow stuff..
about 1mm thick.. on the sides of the plastic container... from the coolant level and up...

should it be time to worry?
or right off as 'normal'?

Mine had just the same when we were taking it to bits yesterday, so unless they are both ****** then I wouldn't worry?

Car is going like a train on amphetamines. Yours felt good the other night too.

The bloke i bought my car off recons that most of em are like it.... i noticed it on mine and said i thought it could be head gasket troubles but he showed me some of his other imprezas and they had it..... i just cleaned it off and im keeping my eye on it to see if it comes back...

Phil,
Been thinking about it a bit more and I don't think it's worth worrying about just yet.
Try cleaning it up a bit then check it after a week or so.

Thought I'd better slow down!

Oh dear......

I had this on my old Cav GSI. The cylinder head went porus and let oil into the water galleries. I kept cleaning the header tank and any pipes to keep the gunk out but to no avail. The problem is that the oil will kill and rot your rubber hoses and they'll split before long - it will happen....

I had to get the head repaired with a sleeved oil gallery, not saying that's the problem here but it sounds like a gasket is straining somewhere.

I've had the green mayo stuff in my header ever since I brought the car 3 years ago. I've done 37,000 miles with it so it cannot be a head gasket problem, and had it on the rollers at PE last weekend and got 234 bhp with only a SS back box and ITG filter. I have wiped it off with my fingers and it gradually comes back over a period of months. I think its something that happens on Subarus, maybe the antifreeze they use. I did querie it with the dealer and they said it OK.
