Default Forester Diff Fitting/Drive Shaft Problems

I have a UK car (MY00 S Turbo) and I have had enough of the noisey diff.
I purchased a used 4.11 diff that from the outside looks exactly the same, can't see any numbers etc.
Took the diff out tonight and just before I fitted the new one I noticed internally that the snap ring locations are around 1cm further out on my used diff, I tried to offer it up but the shafts from my car would not go all the way into the diff?
It seemed to have an extra splined sleeve between the spider gears stopping the shafts from going in too far where my original diff seems to have a stopper plate of some kind..
I am guessing this diff must be from an early WRX that uses shorter stub axels?
any help or advice would be good thanks.
Andy

Ok I think I have found the problem..
The diff I have obtained, although being the correct ratio looks like its from a MY96/97 wrx with the un equal shafts the same as the picture.

I can obtain the matching shafts ok but does anyone know if they are the correct overall length for the forester or are the wrx ones shorter/longer?

Any help would be appreciated
