It sounds like the 5th gear syncro is gone, I've got the same box and it's just started doing it too.

You will most likely be looking at a big labour bill as the box has to be removed and opened to repair.

I hope it is just the oil but I would think it could well be one of the synchros going. I had a similar problem but it was only happening when I changed from 3 >4. It turned out to be the plastic bushing in the selector fork not pushing the gear on square.
I had mine looked at by a Guy who looked after Richard Burns's cars. He did a brilliant job. Drop me a pm and I'll pass his details to you.

Thanks all for your replys, Im pretty sure that the oil was changed by previous owner and it didn't work. I don't mind getting the syncros changed if need be, I can get the box out myself and know someone who builds gearboxes for a living so will have to see how much he will charge and how much parts are.
Anyone have an idea how much it would be for all 5 syncros? Would be better to change them all I think while it's in bits, and if others are likely to go. Thanks all

mine does the same mate, ive had it like this for 2 years, i just change from 4th to 5th gently/slowly, now ive got used to it hardly ever crunches and i dont even notice being gentle changing gear

i think the problem is due to being a weaker syncro on 5th or something like that

I have the same problem here was one good reply from another form with a link on how to fix the problem.

"Here ya go lad,had the same problem a few years ago.Removed transfer case thinking the nut was loose(it was fine)
so took it off anyways and removed synchros which were bent back at the edge, for some reason.Put them in a vice,
filed away the the burr on the edge(5 min job)All straight again, replace and crunch free going on 3 years"

Hi, thanks for the link, looks a bit out of my reach to be honest, but I will show my mechanic and get him to have a look for me. Much appreciated.

Same here, I will be doing the same thing and hopefully it will be a cheap fix if that's all that is wrong. Keep us posted on how you get on.

On sti boxes, usually it's the nut not the syncros and that's an insitu job. David at API can talk you through it or do it if you're near. Not that expensive

The company that can fix dodgy synchro's with just oil will make more money than Bill Gates.

It is just masking the problem, fundamentally the box is damaged and nothing will change that. You have bought time, but not a cure.

Hi David, where are you located, what is the cure to this problem, would it be something you could do while I waited? Thanks

We can get the back of the gearbox off with the main 'box still in the car. Then once we see what's what we can repair. It'll take a while but yes can be done while u wait. It'll take most of the day and you'll need to be here for 09.00 sharp.

We are close to junction 12 of the M40 come up the M5 from Sth Wales, take the A46 at Tewkesbury cut across to junc 14 of the A46 / M40 and go south to Jinc 12 There is a map on the APi Engines web site http://www.apiengines.com/contact.php that will bring you in. Satnav will take you past us by about 3 miles where you will find a car park full of Subaru owners that have become ' lost ' over the years.....

Call me on 01926 614333 for a chat if you wish.

David
